I just bought this phone 2 weeks ago. It was working fine until a few days ago. It didn't ring but the answering machine picked up. So I checked to see if the ringer was on, it was. So I pushed talk to pick it up and see who called. It will not pick up. It beeps 2x a few seconds later and shows "unavailabe" on the display. I have tried taking the battery out and replacing it, putting the battery from the other handset in it, unplugging the phone and plugging it back in, and I plugged another phone it's place and it worked just fine.
One of the hand held phones the number 1 keeps coming on and it won't let me call out when i hit the talk button the number 1 stays on .how can i fix this problem?the madel number ge 27996. please help me

If you have changed the setting on the base station and that did not work, power your base station off completely and try again if that does not work you have an out of box defect and need to exchange it.
If your phone rings normally and your can make and receive calls, the line is OK, please check if answering option is on, typically a botton marked ANS or similar with an indicator or a display showing that it's on.
1) With the phone in standby mode, press the menu/clock key three times. You hear “Ring time” and the current ring time ([2 ], [ 4], [6 ], [T ] Toll saver), and it is displayed on the main base. Then you hear the guidance for setting the ring time.
2) Press the volume/select/ or up or down arrow key until the desired ring time appears.
3) Press the set key to select the new ring time. You hear a confirmation tone, then the announcement “Ring time” followed by the new ring time. After a few seconds, the system announces “To set record time, press menu again.”

You probably have it in the fax/tel or TAD mode. Press the butoon on the top right side of the keyboard marked "mode" until the light above it is on "fax" only. This mode (fax/tel) is for phones/faxes hooked to an answering machine. The "fax" mode puts in into the direct answer mode as a fax machine.
I have a HP Officejet J6480 All-In-One and needed the answering machine and fax to be on at the same time. I called the help line at HP and they said I needed another phone line into the home but I tried this and it worked.
First I got a different phone number for the fax machine - they do this for no charge at my phone company. This is not another physical line into the home - it is just another phone number with a different ring - it rings 2 fast rings for the fax machine instead of the phones regular one ring. I set the answering machine built into the phone to pick up after 4 rings and I set the fax machine to pick up on 2 rings. Be sure to set it so the fax pick up number of rings are less than the answering machine pick up number of rings.
It worked for me. Hope this works for you too.
I fixed it we are cancer patients and just bought this phone I do not feel that we should have to PAY to find out the problem Uniden I thought was a great company maybe I we wrong. We are unable to hire you for this thanks Barbara
I had the same problem. If the phone is plugged into an outlet with any other device, the phone may stop ringing until you plug into an electrical outlet where it is the ONLY device using that outlet. This has worked for me
