Is this problem fixable at home?
I would repair this set in the house, yes! That set is a big old monster to carry around. The tech probably wants to take the set to the shop because they make more money that way. How do you know the tact switches are bad? What are the symptoms of this TV set?

Usually answered in minutes!
It started with the tv switching from tv mode to vid 1 vid 2 vid 3 back to tv. Now that occurs but also it cycles through the set up menus making it tough to watch
