Need to replace power cord at the vacuum.. It seems to have a short inside at the top of the cord that goes into the vacuum... how do I get it apart to get to it. I took out all the screws I could see and it doesn't come apart.

Checking the switch and cord would be the 1st thing to check. Is there a reset near the bottom on the back? If there is one, just push it in and see if it starts. Could also be a bad motor.

Needed bags for this vacuum and FINALLY found them at http://www.totalvac.com/parts/X10-3005.html?zmam=6843742&zmas=1&zmac=6&zmap=X10-3005. Ten bags and two filters for $10.95 plus shipping. Hope this does it for you and anyone needing bags for this vacuum.

These are prone to overheating. The manufacturer put a foam 'filter' wrap around the electric motor. This filter wrap insulates the motor, trapping heat inside, which causes overheating. The motor is very similar in form and function to the one in the Hoover Windtunnel, but the Windtunnel has no filter wrap. It doesn't overheat, and functions fine without it. There is a filter on the intake anyway. It's a redundant filter, and I have removed mine. It works fine now.
If you take the filter out yourself, you will need a special screwdriver for one of the motor cover screws. I guess they don't want the consumers opening it up.
I suggest taking it to a vacuum repair shop and explaining to them the problem, and asking them to remove the filter wrap from the motor.

I suspect you have done something on this by now but . . . You need to pry out a plastic cap/insert in the top of the handle. Beneath it are 1-2 screws to remove. The halves will then come apart. I have mine broken down but have no idea what to do now. It is not making steam. Reply if you have any thoughts.

This vacum cleaner is equipped for auto shut off when it gets hot , It gets hot when it gets clogged either the little sponge filter is to dirty or the the round white filter in the dust collecting container.
But if they are both clean then it is clogged in the line probably with lot of carpet fiber, in that case you ned to take the dust container out and possibly the assembly from bottom like when you change the belt, then take of the Handle where the flex hose is attached, then you gonna need a wire hanger bend a long shape close to the shape of the hose line from handle to where it curved around in the bottom opening where it collects the dust behind the spin brush the just stick the hanger from the handle side cause the clog is probably in the lower side then just push the clogs out . Be care full not to puncture the flex hose with hanger. Its probably a good idea to bent the tip of the hanger so that it wont poke hole in the flex hose.
That's what happened with mine I spend hours and hours and days to figure it out. I could have just through it away, but it just kind a pissed me off and the War was on as stubborn as i am, but finally I won and I got the satisfaction of the sweet victory.
Waste lot of time though but it just one of those things. It never messed with me again.
But that is what's wrong with it. Good luck it a good vacum though very power full.
