My computer 'A Compaq Presario 5000 Series Desktop' hangs up any time.
It is very variable. If it has a mood to work it works for hours without any issue but if it doesn't have the modd to work it hangs up at the start up screen also.
It is a Pentium -3 processor speed -733
I had 2 RAM sticks both [email protected]
I have run the Quick Restore CD that came along with it and restored but it is still doing the same.
I have changed the fan.
I have added an additional fan.
The processor is not heating up.
I have checked and replaced the RAM.
Most probably it has to do something with the motherboard or the cylinders on the motherboard.
I have windows 98 on it as of now and it hangs variable at any time. Mostly when I give some load.
I have formated the drives and reinstalled OS
I have reinstalled 98, 2000 and XP
XP gives the most problem as it hangs very soon on XP
When ever I use the keyboard and scroll through the start menu.
Please advise what needs to be done. I am a computer engineer myself and I rate my knowledge very higly on computers and hardware.
Please advise and help.

Re: Hangs up : Variable
I would maybe look at any devices you have connected as the hanging may well be a corrupt driver or faulty hardware, but as always a process of illimination is required.
i would suspect either a processor overheating or motherboard problem, as you have changed the ram and you mention that under load it happens frequently.

I've almost the same problem. When the system turns on the monitor doesn't sync. After a variable trials with down/up the sync is enabled and the computer starts.A very clear event occurs : when the monitor can''t sync ( and system doesn't boot)you can hear very clear a high fan rotation. When I look/hear in the system the Isuspect the cpu fan. The system boots ( monitor syncs) when the fan rotationgoes from high to low. So the system hangs on an internal check on the rotation speed of the cpu fan.I've googled a lot , but until now doesn't find an answer . Possibilties which I think about : replace cpu fan , clean cpu fun ( but it looks clean).I cannot measure the fan rotation speed when the system is hanging. At normal rotation all info can retrieved witth the program cpu-z.Did you already have a solution ?
Once try to Re-Install your Operating System and Just after Installing your OS just once Mo niter your CPU usage in Task Manager if it is Simply raising to 80% to 100% then it is a issue of over heating
Please have a look at your device manager to see if everything is OK with your modem.
To do so, please find the "My computer" icon and RIGHT click on it, choose properties from the menu and then select the hardware tab. Then click the device manager button. If you see a yellow sign next to the modems then there must be something wrong with your modem.
Uninstall it and install the driver again, either from your CDs or by downloading the driver from the modem manufacturer's website.
