Hangs up : Variable

My computer 'A Compaq Presario 5000 Series Desktop' hangs up any time. It is very variable. If it has a mood to work it works for hours without any issue but if it doesn't have the modd to work it hangs up at the start up screen also. It is a Pentium -3 processor speed -733 I had 2 RAM sticks both [email protected] I have run the Quick Restore CD that came along with it and restored but it is still doing the same. I have changed the fan. I have added an additional fan. The processor is not heating up. I have checked and replaced the RAM. Most probably it has to do something with the motherboard or the cylinders on the motherboard. I have windows 98 on it as of now and it hangs variable at any time. Mostly when I give some load. I have formated the drives and reinstalled OS I have reinstalled 98, 2000 and XP XP gives the most problem as it hangs very soon on XP When ever I use the keyboard and scroll through the start menu. Please advise what needs to be done. I am a computer engineer myself and I rate my knowledge very higly on computers and hardware. Please advise and help.

    Thanks Sandrew.

    The step is quite logical.

But I have already remove the plugged in devices (PCMCIA slots) like the Modem, TV Tuner Card, Ethernet Cards etc.

There is no hardware or device conflict as shown in the Device manager.

    Please advise something else.

I would maybe look at any devices you have connected as the hanging may well be a corrupt driver or faulty hardware, but as always a process of illimination is required. i would suspect either a processor overheating or motherboard problem, as you have changed the ram and you mention that under load it happens frequently.

As you say, logical, but i was refering to external hardware printers, or wireless adapters etc.

It may sound silly, but i have known a mouse to conflict with the graphics, as you will know they work on DPI and can cause crashes.

I would check all the motherboard drivers are upto date and especially your graphics, you could try using your pc in safemode and see if you get any system hangs, this would then illiminate the driver problem in the graphics.

Also in xp did you look at the event viewer in administrative tools and check the catagories for any clues as to the problem.

Lastly check the motherboard for signs of any of the capacitors bulging and popping up the top cap, as thats an obvious sign of imminent motherboard failure

Winnt_root>\System32\Hal.dll missing or corrupt:

if you have a windows cd you can do a system restore from it or at the boot screen some computers have a system recovery so you can use system restore without a disk, if you can use system restore, restore your computer to a earlier time and that should solve your problem

Compaq computer freezes or hangs

Please have a look at your device manager to see if everything is OK with your modem. To do so, please find the "My computer" icon and RIGHT click on it, choose properties from the menu and then select the hardware tab. Then click the device manager button. If you see a yellow sign next to the modems then there must be something wrong with your modem. Uninstall it and install the driver again, either from your CDs or by downloading the driver from the modem manufacturer's website.
