I JUST finished mine on my 97 528i. Bad news tho. The head typically cracks because the cooling ports are 1/2 in away from the head. Mine cracked in 3 places. I ended up going to a junk yard and found a head that they resurfaced and re did the valves for $600. Start looking around because your head a almost Garrantee it's cracked.

Get a service manual. Bentley publishing is a good one. You will need special tools. Don't let someone who does not work on bmw's try. No matter how good they think they are.

How many hours and how much is the cost to replace a head gasket on a BMW 528 I

Most shops will quote about 11.5 hours of labor at about $95 to $125 per hour. An experienced tech can do the job in 8 hours but you will likely get charged the book rate of 11.5 hours. Gasket set is about $250 or more from a shop or order it form Autohaus for $195. Also add in the cost of radiator fluid and synthetic oil and filter. Other possible costs will be head resurfacing, valve job, or total head replacement if you have a crack in it. Also consider replacement of water pump and thermostat at this time. Total at a shop, depending where you go, will run from low end of about $1,500 up to $2,500. Much higher if your head is gone and needs replaced.
