Get a service manual. Bentley publishing is a good one. You will need special tools. Don't let someone who does not work on bmw's try. No matter how good they think they are.

I think if you ask a question about head gaskets,
it is not likely you will be doing that job.

Most shops will quote about 11.5 hours of labor at about $95 to $125 per hour. An experienced tech can do the job in 8 hours but you will likely get charged the book rate of 11.5 hours. Gasket set is about $250 or more from a shop or order it form Autohaus for $195. Also add in the cost of radiator fluid and synthetic oil and filter. Other possible costs will be head resurfacing, valve job, or total head replacement if you have a crack in it. Also consider replacement of water pump and thermostat at this time. Total at a shop, depending where you go, will run from low end of about $1,500 up to $2,500. Much higher if your head is gone and needs replaced.

its located on the front of the head just above the thermostat

unfortunately, it sounds like you need a new transmission 200k is very good, you may try to find a rebuilt one.

Could be a head gasket. If it got hot enough, it could have warped the head. Costs from $1900 - $3000.
