I have a 50UX26B Hitachi 50 inch rear projection screen TV that was manufactured in 1996. It has always treated me fine until a few months ago. The problem is simple. It will work for about 20 minutes and then shut off. Then I will turn it on and it will last about 1 minute and then again at 20 seconds, and that is about as long as it will work.
Please advise on what to do and if I can fix this myself or if I should have someone look at it.
Thank you greatly.

Re: TV shuts off after 2 to 30 minutes
I'm afraid this one is something you'll have to bite the bullet on and take to the shop.
For now it sounds like a bad cap that's going thermal. Meaning that it heats up beyond it's tolerance range and allows the voltages in that circuit to go too high, causing the x-ray protection circuit to shutdown the unit. Because the cap is already warm when you try subsequently it takes less time for the protect circuit to react.
A shop will ESR the caps in the suspected circuit. My first suspect would be the SMPS (switch mode power supply). And they would also check the following:
Z00451 - I901 Hybrid Ic Str-M6811a
2000465 - 3 Opto-Couplers Ps2501-1
2348253m - D906 Zener Diode Mtz-J22cta
2312171 - Q901 Transistor 2sc3852
2381349 - I905 120v. Hybrid Ic Se120n
I doubt seriously any of these would need to be replaced from your description of the symptoms. But if it progresses to an instant shutdown you could have damage to some of the above.
Sorry for the less than good news, please don't kill the messenger, but it's not too expensive if it's just caps. Find a reputable shop in your area and take it to them, it will save a few bucks.

You have to get into whats called DCAM mode to manually converge the set if you don't see a menu option for convergence. Goto the site www.tvrepairkits.com - they have a DCAM article on their tips page.
Replace Both of your STK ICs they are big black ICs will have Part# on them STK392-570s Call Mats Electronics 1-800-628-1118 Also CKf903 and pico fusses they look like resistors but are yellow or Green 5amps and 6amps
