Mine makes noise in both directions but is not cutting like it used to. So I took it apart tonight and found a stripped gear in the gear reducer train. The motor and some of the gears makes noise but then the connection to the cuttings is discontiuous. Now I need to try to find a spare part. This may be your problem.

there is a very small lever between two cutters around the middle that activates a microswitch to turn it on when you offer paper to be cut
the problem will be in that area ( switch or lever broken) as it's purpose is to switch on the cutters
reverse is straight drive from the control switch
Does the machine even run in reverse???? Have you ever oiled the machine.???
Put some "shredder oil" onto the cutting blades while it is running in reverse then try running it forwards.
If you can hear the motor running but the cutting blades dont turn you will have to open it up to see what is broken.
For parts assistance you can contact Royal at 1-800-524-0799.
Some shredders aren't designed to shred anything more than paper. Credit cards, staples, paper clips and the like could have jammed it up. Try running the shredder in reverse and oiling the blades. More help with paper shredder oil here: http://hubpages.com/hub/Paper-Shredder-Oil
If you can't get the paper shredder up and running, it looks like you might have to pick up a new paper shredder. Paper shredders can be pretty cheap though, great guide to cheap paper shredders here: http://hubpages.com/hub/Best-Paper-Shredders
Do you have lights.?? Will it run in reverse.???
Unplug machine and try cleaning the "eyes" in the middle where you insert the paper. If none of these work you may have blown pcb inside...you can call Royal at 1-800-524-0799 for parts assistance and prices.
Try pouring some shredder oil into the cutting blades where you insert the paper then run the unit in reverse for a while. Then put some of the shredder oil onto a sheet of paper and try shredding the sheet of paper. Some lubrication on a x-cut shredder does not hurt.
Try pouring some shredder oil into the throat where you normally insert the paper and run the machine in reverse.Put machine back into ready condition.
Put a piece of paper in the throat just enough so the machine should run but not all the way in so that the cutting mechanism catches the paper...all you want to do is make the machine run forwards but not actually be feeding in any paper.
If it wont even run in the forward direction you may have a pcb prob...give Royal a call at 1-800-524-0799 for parts assistance.
