Remove the outside lamp cover.
Turn the knob counterclockwise to OPEN and pull out the cover.
Hook a finger through the loop of the lamp handle and pull the handle upwards then pull the lamp straight out.
Put the new lamp in its place. Mount it securely and take extra care not to touch glass portion of the lamp.
Turn the knob back to CLOSE and secure the cover.
Put the outside lamp cover back in its place.
Turn on the TV
Browse MENU>SETTINGS>SET-UP>Lamp Replacement then follow the on-screen procedure.

The lamp is going bad. If it was the thermal fuse it would not be intermittent. It is very common for some Sony sets like yours to do exactly what you describe when the lamp is going bad.

There are 4 1000 mf. 35 V caps. on the AC IN pwb. (power supply) that are chronic fail items. After back is off, slide the chasis on the left side back toward you. Slide about 1/2 inch and it will lift out of track and then the chasis will be more accessible. The said caps are the tallest on the bd. and 2 are located side by side on the bottom front of the chassis. The other two are side by side about an 1 1/2 above the other 2. Most likely the top of the caps are pooched out. Replace all 4 whether they look bad or not. Problem solved
