There is a harness that feeds the ignition remove your steering wheel cover and you will see about a dozen wires going into a clip that is attached to the back of the steering wheel , those wires give way and are not making contact reach in to the back and pull the harness forward and then try and push each wire back into the clip try this and see if it works it solved my problem basicly it is just a loose wire in the harness,,

Before pulling wires out of you column, make sure battery connection is good and charged. The lock that keeps key in ignition while car is not in park MUST be energized because it is an electromagnet and will not unlock from the on position until 12 volts pass through the gear shift and determines it to be in the park position. Then the switch allows power to flow to the key locking mechanism near the ignition which will allow the key to be rotated and removed. There is possibly a problem between the park sensor, the locking mechanism in the column near the ignition, or the relay in between the two. I had one that wouldn't come out of the ignition, start, come out of gear, or supply power to any accessory. Loose battery connection. Worst part?...I asked my girlfriends ex boyfriend for advice while he came to get his son from my home. My ******* had a loose battery connection. Fml. Truck runs tho

Getting my 97 Ford expedition into neutral without a key

Brake-shift interlock The brake-shift interlock feature prevents you from shifting from P(Park) unless the brake pedal is depressed (with the ignition in the On position). If you cannot move the gearshift out of P(Park) with the brake pedal depressed: 1. Turn ignition key to Off. 2. Apply the parking brake. 3. Turn ignition key to Lock and remove the key. 4. Re-insert the ignition key and turn it to Off. 5. Shift the transmission to N(Neutral). 6. Start the vehicle. If you need to use the above procedure, it is possible that a fuse has blown and your brakelamps may not be functioning. Refer to the Roadside emergencies chapter for instructions on replacing fuses.

Key wont go in to lock position. Now, battery has 13 volts but car wont start all lights come on 2006 monte carlo

To remove key (lock position), the transmission needs to be in PARK.

To start (engine crank), the transmission must be either in PARK or NEUTRAL.

Try apply parking break, put transmission in neutral and turn ignition key. If engine does not crank, turn and hold key in start position then move transmission selector to see if there is a transmission select position where it does crank.

I don’t know what is wrong with my Saturn .it locked my key in ignition and won’t start either

If the position sensor for transmission is faulty it cannot detect park or neutral. In my younger days we called them neutral safety switches. These days the key locks in ignition too when they die or come loose.

Due to injury a friend replaced automatic shift mechanism on 98 tahoe 4wd. When done wife drove it and parked. Went to drive and will not start. Shifted to neutral, but still won't start.

You are right , it shouldn't shift out of park with out the key in the ignition lock cylinder or with out your foot on the brake pedal ! Now then , won't start how ? When you turn the key to start , the starter spins the engine or doesn't do anything ? Is the anti-theft on the dash flashing or on steady .

My 2002 tbird won't get out ofnpark

If you cannot move the gearshift lever out of P (Park) with ignition in
the RUN position and the brake pedal depressed:
1. Apply the parking brake, turn ignition key to LOCK, then remove the
key.
2. Insert the key and turn it to OFF. Apply the brake pedal and shift to N
(Neutral). This allows the automatic transmission shift lever to be
moved from the P (Park) position without the brake pedal
depressed.
3. Start the vehicle.
If it is necessary to use the above procedure to move the gearshift lever,
it is possible that a fuse has blown or the vehicle's brakelamps are not
operating properly.

The key is in the ignition and it is locked and will not turn. we have tried everything but the key wont turn on the car. the key does come out of the ignition but wont turn to start the car.

Your steering locks could be in a bind. Is your steering wheel turned to the side? Try moving the steering wheel while trying to turn the key. If this is not the case, then you most likely have either a worn-out key or a worn-out ignition lock cylinder assembly.
I would first try a different key if you have one. If there is not another key, I would take the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) to the dealer along with proof of registration and picture ID, and have them cut a NEW key using the key codes for your vehicle. If this does not work, then you will probably have to replace the ignition lock cylinder assembly.

I have a 1998 Ford Windstar. Got in to drive, turned the key to start and 'snap' something seems to have broke within the ignition lock cylinder... all of the accessories are on... the key...

This happened to to me with my ranger. I went and bought in ignition and a junk yard and no problems after that. That way your not out of a lot of money.
