This printer has been sitting for at least six months; maybe longer. It has plenty of yellow ink left, but it won't print any yellow color.

Re:
Take all the cartridges out.
Get a wet tissue paper or better still a 'moist wipe' put it on a plate stand the cartridges on
Does the print head come off on this model?
If so do that same with the print head.
Always print something in Full colour at lease once a week.
If you are unable to do this then take the cartridges out put them in a plastic bag with damp tissue to stop them drying out and store in a cool place

You may have blocked print head nozzles. Try the printer maintenance to clear the printer nozzles. After several deep cleaning attempts and there is no improvements in the print then a new print head is required. A new print head maybe expensive and it maybe more cost effective to purchase a new printer.
If you can access the printhead, try taking a rag with a small area heavily wet with Denatured Alcohol (this is a cleaning solution that can be purchased at Walmart or most stores with cleaning supplies. Rub the printhead thoroughly with the alcohol for a minute or two, it should help loosen any dried ink. Then try to print or run a print head clean cycle on the printer.
here's a solution i came across when dealing with the same problem. apparently the printer expects all of the cartridges to be full and has a sensor to make sure they are even when only printing black. hope this helps!
The printer has a built-in waste ink absorber for the ink used during Print Head cleaning. Eight flashes indicates that the waste ink absorber is nearly full. Press the RESUME/CANCEL button to cancel the error so you can continue printing. Before the waste ink absorber becomes completely full, contact a Canon service representative.
Important
Canon recommends that you call for service as soon as this error occurs. Once the waste ink absorber becomes completely full, printing will no longer be possible
Is the yellow ink full? You can run an ink check in your printer properties to find out for sure. You can also pull your yellow ink cartridge out and put it back in to make sure that it is sitting correctly.
Most printers use a little of all inks in their functioning, just to keep all the inks flowing, so while it is not printing yellow, it uses it in the startup mode to verify function and cleaning mode to clean the nozzles. Manufacturers usually do not put in a bypass for this, because they make money mostly on selling you ink cartridges.
Makje sure you run an ink nozzle clean regularly, when printers are turned off ink tends to soidify and block the jets ( no one tells you this) nut printers should be left on to ensure against this. EPSON printers used to do this a lot and completely clog after 36 hrs, so over a weekend you were lucky if anything printed on monday and the printer became a write off after a few months. We found by trial and error and at grreat cost to leave them on to keep ink warm and in a more liquid state.
make sure that you are using genuine Brother ink cartridges.what is on the lcd screen of the brother machine?if no cart, remove all cart.reinstall them.if there is an error message, sorry, but you have to replaced.and your brother machine does not have a green cart.it only has cyan(blue),mag(red),yellow and black.there is a way of cleaning it though
