My over the range microwave turns on by itself. Light comes on and it starts making sound as if some part is running. I tried to see if it heats up water, it doesn't.
I have to play with the door to get the motor (or whatever is running) to stop and the light to go off. Then I can use it.
I am trying to decide whether it is a cheap and easy fix or should I just buy another unit. This microwave has another problem - the turn table doesn't work. If I take the turn table off, I can see the motor is turning (very slowly though), but it doesn't even move with the weight on it.
Replace it. I work in sales for Whirlpool. It sounds like the door switch is either sticking or shorted. Also because your turntable continues to run it sounds like a short. Microwaves are a unit we only recommend an authorized technician to work on due to the microwaves it uses.
The cost of a new one is usually easily half or more the cost of repairing it.
Average service call just to give you an estimate is 80-90$

If the touchpad on your GE Cafe over-the-range microwave has stopped making beeping sounds, there could be a few potential causes. Here are a few troubleshooting steps you can try:
Check the volume settings: It's possible that the volume settings on your microwave have been accidentally turned off or lowered. Look for a "Volume" or "Sound" button on your microwave and adjust the settings as needed.
Check for a mute function: Some GE microwaves have a "Mute" button that allows you to silence the beeps temporarily. Make sure this feature hasn't been activated.
Power cycle the microwave: Turn off the power to your microwave for a few minutes, then turn it back on. This can sometimes reset the touchpad and restore functionality.
Check for error codes: If there's a problem with the microwave, it may display an error code on the control panel. Look in your user manual or search online for information on what the code means and how to resolve it.
Call for service: If none of these steps work, there may be a problem with the touchpad itself. Contact GE customer service or a professional appliance repair technician for assistance.
Microwaves do normally 'turn on', in that the light comes on and the fan starts running. If the turntable starts turning and it is emitting microwave energy, then you need to take it for service or replace it. To me, it sounds fine.
If anything other than the light comes on when you open the door, unplug it immediately. Can you supply the model number and more detailed information about what's happening? For instance, you hear the transformer come on or the carousel starts turning.. Does the touch pad take input when you press buttons?
Note: if it's just the light coming on and making no sound, it could be possible it's in clock mode, waiting to have the time entered. If you press clock again, it would go to normal operating mode and work.
Please let us know.. Hope this helps.

It sounds to me that your door switches aren't working.Your oven is protected by a couple of switches that engage when you open or close the door. They control a couple of safety features and also your interior light. One of them seems defective.
Likely a microprocessor/control panel issue. Microwave ovens that sit over ranges often have electronic failures due to heat, humidity, and grease, from the range below, which come into contact with their main circuit boards.
This may sound a bit nuts, but remove the glass tray and support ring. Clean the wheels and ring. Also clean the glass and microwave surface where the wheels run. Any tiny bit of debris will stop the wheels from turning, and make a rattling noise. If that doesn't help, you may need a new turntable motor.
Your microwave turning on by itself is a "self preservation feature" of the GE Profile Advantium and maybe some other models. Read the manual, When your over the range oven gets warm enough, for whatever reason the venting fan comes on until a satisfactory oven temperature is reached. You are not permitted to shut the vent fan off. Also it seems a temperature near room temp must be achieved before it shuts the fan motor off, it is very annoying. We had to return our Advantium because of fan noise. I configured the ovens vent fan to the recirculate direction because we do not have a vent duct that exits the house over our range. When the vent fan acting as the ovens cooling fan automatically turned on we would have to leave the house to hear each other talk. Too bad we really liked the oven other than that major problem. LG Over the range microwave. Turntable turns when door is closed at all times, no heating.
