Why do you want to reset it so soon? Unless you are going to run it 24/7 you should get plenty of use from it before it needs it. If it hits the counter within 12 months it should be covered by the warranty - unless you are somehow going to invalidate the warranty (CIS perhaps)

ERROR 5100 means that there is some foreign object blocking your ink cartridge carriage that disables it from moving. It may be a piece of paper or a scotch tape or a staple wire. You may try cleaning also the encoder strip with a moist tissue paper. Furthermore, you may also try cleaning CAREFULLY the contact points of the cartridge holder and the cartridge itself (those shiny bronze pins) with a moist lint-free cloth.
since canon printers need service tool to reset the waste ink counter, i suggest that you bring your printer to an authorized service center in your area to have them reset the waste absorber counter and clean it as well.
Dear khalid, To fix this problem you need to reset waste ink counter of the printer by using General Tools for Canon ip1200 series (General Tools for ip1300 & 1800 series also works on this printer) Perform following step to reset waste ink counter:
Enter service mode:
-Plug in power cable while holding power button. -Press RESUME button twice
Connect USB cable (you may also connect USB cable before entering service mode, no problem).
Run General Tool
Select USB port
Click waste ink counter: Main & Platen
Turn off the printer then turn on and run your printer as usual.
I think it will be more helpful with picture enclose. For I cannot insert image more than 150 kb here, I suggest you to visit Canon Inkjet Printer Forum. I have discussed this topic before. Please rate me. Regards,
another solution for a quick override is to unplug the power lead from the back of the printer. With one hand hold down the power button on the printer whilst simultaneously plugging back in the power lead. When the light is back on, take your finger off the power button. You may need to press the power button once more, but this should 'override' the problem until the next time you turn your printer off.
