You do not have to copy this file to your laptop. You have to copy and run this file so that the drivers for the cell phone get installed on the laptop. Then only would you be able to use the phone as a modem.

I had the very same problem with a Sandisk 8GB microSD card. After upgrading to the latest ROM (I upgraded to version 1.0.405.109663 - offered for download in the Europe Global page) the problem just went away. However DO backup at least your contacts before the upgrade, as this will factory reset your phone.
