That sounds like a defective LCD panel tab, Sony's and Samsungs are notorious for this problem. Does the problem go away when the set warms up or when you tap the screen?

SOURCE: Sony Bravia KLV-40U100M-screen is distorted, overlay or various vertical lines

The resolution on this was to check the surge protector the television was plugged into. Once we unplugged and plugged into another surge protector, the screen went back to normal and the appearance was great. We believe this was due to one of the resistors within the surge protector may have become faulty.

SOURCE: My SOny Bravia 40 inch LCD TV has a vertical line

Hi,

It could be 1 of 4 things:
1. One of the ribbon cables has worked itself loose (Simple Fix)
2. One of the assembly boards maybe faulty
3. The driver board which feeds the panel maybe faulty
4. The panel is faulty

The driver board in the UK costs approx £70 and approx £35-70 to fit it if this is the fault.

All other parts are between £80-160 and approx £35-70 to fit it if this is the fault.

The panel will cost approx 50-75% of what the TV was worth when you bought it - "Repair versus Replacement"

Thanks

Usually the LCD panel cost is around 80% of total TV price. Look for it in a center of service.

Display not clear

You should buy its genuine board, and to get it, contact the authorized service center for Sony. Never attempt to replace a board not genuine, to this TV. Especially to Sony and Philips, the original replacement should be done; other wise it might poise other severe problems. If you wish to get some details, check the site linked here. For a KLV-37U300A I have proven the remote is working ( by checking for a light in digital camera ) so it must be the IR receiver. What do i need to buy to get a new receiver

The infrared pickup is usually on a separate printed circuit board near the front bottom edge, but it may not be simple case of just replacing the board, even if you can find a replacement for it (this is not an off-the-shelf item). There could be a fault anywhere in the circuit from the pickup to the microprocessor. Unless you have experience with electronics you should take the TV to a reputable TV repair shop in your area.

If you still want to look for obvious faults yourself then you need to remove the back cover WITH THE POWER LEAD REMOVED FROM THE MAINS. There may be one or more dry joints. Look for capacitors with bulging tops. Check all lead connections with a multimeter.

Be advised that if you are not familiar with electronics then you could cause more damage so be careful.

Sony Bravia KDL-40S2000 thin vertical line

If the line is present in all inputs and modes, there is a problem with the LCD Panel. The only way to fix it is to replace the whole LCD Panel which is very expensive (usually around $1000+ for 40" Sony). Unless the TV in under warranty, it is usually around the same price for a new TV.
