Can anyone give me an idea as to what might be wrong? I can use my projector for about 5 mins, then the lamp suddenly turns off. When this happens, the power light is red and the status light flashes green. Do I need a new lamp? or what? I can still here the coolng fan running.
The solution is a weird one. I had the same problem with my Sony Cienza VPL-HS1. Run for about 5 minutes and then the lamp would go out. The warning would show that Lamp/Cover was an issue. I assumed the lamp had reached its lifespan.
Wrong.
All it was, was the filter sitting in the filter box has a small trigger switch that turns off the lamp as a safety when someone inadvertently opens the cover for the filter.
Well, strangely enough, the box and the cover are sized in a way to expand when they heat up. (which they do aggressively) When they heat up they expand, and ever so slightly move the filter away from the switch far enough to trigger it to the off position (only about 1/64th of an inch).
Thats why when some of you tip your projector on its side it runs ok (gravity pushing the filter back in place).
The solution is to put a tiny strip of duct tape along the far edge (the edge opposite of the switch) of the filter on its plastic surround. This will snug-up the filter harder against the switch. Even when it tries to shift under expansion and contraction, it will not allow the switch to poke out far enough to turn off.
So, a penny of tape does the job!

Funny, mine is mounted upsidedown and does the same as yours. After it starts up, it woks for about a minute or two and shuts down.
When I turn the unit on its side(yes sideways) it stays on and does not turn off! WEIRD!
I can only come to the conclusion that it has some kind of loose connection or something.
