We Had The Same Malfunction 8 Problem And It Came Down To A Swolen O-Ring In The Brewing Piston, We Replaced The O-Ring With One Slightly Smaller That Still Sealed The Compartment And Our Problem Was Solved, Hope This Helps Others.

Malfunction 8 on the Saphira is a fault in the brewing head region. We have two of these machines, the first time I saw the malfunction 8 message it was a brewing head problem, fairly straightforward to change but I believe they are quite pricey. Worth a strip down and a wash out as they can bind with coffee grounds. The second occasion it turned out to be a problem with the motor that drives the brewing head. It is a fairly small dc motor with a worm drive plastic gear, it has a micro switch mounted on it to measure the movement of the brew head assembly. On this machine the gear had stripped, so the brew head wasn't being moved, and that generated the malfunction 8 code again. Fairly simple to change, but no idea on the price of the part, but unlikely to be cheap. Also it is unlikely that the gear itself can be changed as the motor is held in a plastic assembly which will almost certainly self destruct when opening it no matter how careful you are. Incidentally, both of these machines have done over 50,000 coffees, which is probably way more than they are designed for.
