The main problem that i am having with my notebook is the broken hinge. The plastic surrounding the hinge has cracked and fallen off, exposing the metal hinge beneath it. My question is: is there anything I can do to repair the broken hinge, or will I have to purchase a new laptop?
Go to your local thrift stores and ask about electronics. I volunteer at one and am the toy, book, electronic, and militaria expert. We sort, sell, ebay, or trash items.
As for electronics. We have dumpsters full of monitors and printers, etc that can't be sold or sold for as little as a dollar each.
I suggest that you buy a laptop and/or desktop and salvage the items that you need.
Also, it can be a way to green up your local dumpsites. Offer to take items from the stores and recycle them where you can or sell things on ebay for extra income.
I have found hinges and parts at the store and salvaged what I need.

Really no need to replace the laptop for this problem. Usually you can contact the manufacturer and they will be happy to sell you new hinges. Depending on the manufacturer and how the hinges are will determine the price. If you find them too pricey, go to ebay and look for hinges for your laptop model number. Chances are they'll be under $50.

Here is the response that I got from Verizon customer service today via e-mail. I, too, have the broken hinge on a new LG VX8350:
"According to our records a limited number of LG VX8350 devices may
exhibit a cracked hinge or stress cracks on the front housing from
normal operation. LG determined hinge / stress cracking is due to a
production issue with the hinge. LG has implemented corrective action
to resolve issue in future production and devices repaired by LG."
They are replacing the phone with a certified LG. All in all, I am very pleased with their commitment to customer service. I would suggest contacting Verizon directly and letting them know that you are aware of the hinge problems.
unlikely that its still under warranty, but you can check the warranty status at support.dell.com you may also find parts lists on their website. The plastic bezels on laptops aren't very hard to replace.
I had this problem. I reversed the decorative plastic strips, both ends of the strip have hinge pin holes, so the doors can open left or right. I put the TOP decorative plastic strip on the bottom and BOTTOM on top.
This is not for the faint hearted and because there are many types of different hinges used i cant be absolutley specific but here goes any way :)
You will probably need to lift the caseing aroung the top of the keyboard, then the caseing around the screen. There generaly lots and lots of small screws involved and some locking tabs.
I find the best way to deal with the locking tabs is to tease them open with something like a jewellers screw driver and then use
You should then be able to get to the hinges for the screen. The main problem I've seen with loose hinges is the plastic fixes for hinges have broken and the screws have fallen. If this is the case there isnt a great deal you can do other than replacing the screen caseings.
Hope this helps, if you need any more assistance please dont hesitate to ask.
