I have a playstation 2 silver slimline console and i went to play god of war 2 (after waiting 27hrs in a blackout) and it says unable to read disc, yet when i put in older and scratched ps2 games they work perfectly!!!! i took the Disc to a mates place who has the older style chunky black console and it works!! i tried other games and they work, i tried an old DVD, that works but when i put in a BRAND NEW DVD it didnt work either, i received the same message unable to read disc. i changed the speed of the disc (spin thingy) to smooth and fast but to no avail. PLEASE HELP ME!!!!!! i dont understand why it works on used games but not new ones. wouldnt it be the other way around???????

Re: Playstation2 not working properly
Hi there. Are the older games you're trying to play CD games ? They might be :) The laser lens in such consoles can be fried on the dvd part, but still read CD's. Have you tried, to read a DVD Movie in it ? I bet it doesn't work either.
The slimlines are infamous for laser burnout, and god they're quick to burn. You can try to clean your laser lens with a q-tip and some rubbing alcohol, but i'd say you're already out of luck.
The optical lens is quite easy to replace in those units. They can be found on ebay and on various websites for 20$, and if you can play a bit with a phillips screwdriver, chances you'll be able to replace it yourself with a bit of patience are good enough.

Okay, are you using the original PS2? If you are then it more then likely is the age of the console. The original PS2 console actually can't play some of the games that were made after the PS2 slim was released. If your using the slim than the only thing i can advise is to try using a laser lens cleaner disc and see if that helps :)
Things like this are usually caused by overlooked manufacturing discrepancies. It may be best to contact Sony with your system's model info, serial number, and date of manufacture. They may be able to help you under warranty.
the problem with god of war 2 is the ps2 lasers are not capable of reading the dual layer disks. either wait and get a ps3, change the laser - i just bought on for 3 quid on e bay brand new. the lasers are not designed to be played the amount they are played. the laser is designed to play 20 hours a week but as sony found out he avg gamer will clock up up tp 60 hours a week so the lasers are only lasting 1/3rd of the time they should. plus if they put a good laser in the machine u would one buy 1 ps2 and then 1 ps3. i have burned out 3 ps2's so far lol. just forget the game or wait till its put on platinum as these are single layerd disk
