Kenmore microwave 72180012

Most of the time when the microwave is on there is a noise related to the turntable. It is a grinding type noise. I thoroughly cleaned the microwave, and while it did help a bit, I still hear the noise. I bought this in August of 2006. Any thoughts?

My microwave makes a grinding noise when running and the turntable doesn't work.

Possible there is friction within the drive , the shaft or the motor. You can remove and RESET the drive. Remove the motor , MANUALLY check the motion of the mechanism which will confirm the case. You c an reset using a bit of lubrication.

Whirlpool mircowave making grinding noise

The grinding noise could be from the turntable motor, or the fan. Remove plate from oven and put a cup of cold water in, set for 30 seconds and run the microwave, if no grinding is detected it means the turntable motor is near end of life. If there is no change unplug microwave and remove top check the fan mounts tighten if loose, if straps are tight suspect the fan motor.

Turntable on Kenmore Elite will not turn?

The turntable system consists of the motor, the coupler, the turntable support with rollers, and the tray.

You can see and hear a video of how a turntable motor should sound when you rotate it by hand.

If yours is not set to be off via the control panel, and it won't rotate or it sounds like it's grinding, etc., you may have a bad motor or plastic coupler.

If you don't have your owner's manual, you can just enter your full model number at the Sears parts site.

A full Sears/Kenmore model number has 3 digits, a dot, then 8 more digits, such as ###.########

On the resulting page, look to the right for the blue "View manuals" button. Click there.

That Sears-related site has many free manuals. While the manuals they list there are all free, they will ask you to register.

Many times, the owner's manual will have the installation instructions inside.

If yours is not listed there for free, you would have to order it through the
Sears parts site.

That's where you could also order any needed parts and find handy exploded parts views.

Many thanks to e3enigma above! I removed the synch motor under the turntable; all other microwave functions work fine and the grinding noise is gone, hooray! A trip to the appliance parts store tomorrow for a replacement synchronous motor and all should be well. Thanks again!

The turntable makes grinding niose when engaged

That model number doesn't ring a bell. Is that right? Is it foreign?

Chances are the coupler and/or turntable support will be damaged or warped.

Also on some brands, the "packing" (often a rubber grommet) must be replaced.
