My roadmate 1200 sreen has gone blank when i press the sceen i can hear sounds but no vision

plug it in to a known good charger for a few hours, then press and hold the power button for up to ten seconds.

make sure green light is on if using the car charger and let it plugged in for awhile, then hold the power button (up to ten seconds) until it starts..

if you tried charging it with both house charger and car charger and tried to start it like i explain and it still will not start, its most likely a bad power port which is very common with this model and many other magellan models.

try the reset first (little pin hole on the side) using a paper clip, hold it in for 10-15 seconds. if that fails, plug in your charger and charge for awhile the press and hold the power button for upto 15 seconds till it starts. it sounds like you might have multiple problems. the screen going white normally indicates a bad screen but might just need reseated (ribbon cable)..try what i suggested first, if none of those work, let me know and we will see what else we can do.

check that your battery is fully charged use an AC charger if you have one.
Check Baud rate and port are set in accordance with manual

The USB must be for charging the unit and downloading updates when it becomes available. You have to unplug the USB and use the battery power to put in addresses .My 1200 does the same.

The roadmate operates on five volts dc. Look at the back of the unit and it says so there. Inside the cig lighter plug that comes with the roadmate 2000 is a transformer that converts 12 v dc to five v dc. You used the wrong charger and put twelve volts across a unit that only handles and requires five volts.
Check to be sure that you used the correct charger. it sounds like you did not. It may be possible that the charger was still wet or was damaged when wet and that it shorted out.
Radio shack sells a charger for the car that is made for magellin roadmate 2ooo. It includes several different tips including the one that fits this gps unit and the output is five v dc. It is possible that what you smelled was the charger cord and not the gps unit itself.
I used the wrong charger on mine and had a similar problem. I bought this charger and all is well. radio shack cat no is 20-151. Get it soon because it is on sale for about thirteen dollars and is discontinued. As of today, sat jan 12, 2008 they still have them in stock at most stores. You can call ahead or look online and it will even tell you which stores have them, or you can order online as well.
No, if it is the gps unit titself, do not try to mess w the circuit board. Its cheaper to buy a new one. good luck to all w similar problems and ALLWAYS check to see that voltage and ac or dc symbols, as well as polarity, match up. If not bring your electronics to radio shack Before powering up and they can check all of this ffor free if you are unsure.
