Broken edge of bulb- TV won't work

My HL-R6167W was making a loud whining, grinding sound at times for a while, until one day a loud pop and the set stopped working. Showed the lights on the power button. I took it apart thinking it was the color wheel, but the wheel is intact, though there were some bits in the well. Upon closer inspection, only the edge of the wheel had a bit of minor chipping on side, but the wheel was completely intact. I then took out the bulb and removed it from its housing, after finding a few small clear glass chunks nearby. The bulb is also intact, except for one corner. This is the square bulb and only the corner is chipped off. What could have caused this and what should I replace?: I was going to replace the bulb and wheel, but I am confused as to what could have chipped the bulb corner off? Also, if replacing the wheel, how do I find out whether I have and L3 or L6 chassis? It really appears that the only thing that happened with the color wheel was the bulb corner got chipped off and pieces were blown into the wheel by the fan, so I am really not sure what all should be repaired.

Thanks in advance for your help.

So how do you determine which chassis if the color wheel needs to be replaced? If there is the noted minor chipping on the edges of the side of the wheel, does that need replacing or it that not a given? Thanks

    Model HL-R6167W

    Serial 39HR3CKY601497J

    Version (blank)

I found something that indicated blank version means L3. Is this correct?

    Thanks,

    Marilyn

The color wheel was the cause of the loud whining noise. The only item in the set under pressure that could possibly pop is the lamp. The fact that you have the 3 lights on is the lamp failure indicator. The lamp driver or ballast can also fail and give the same light error but I have never had one to pop.I would replace the lamp for sure. Also the lamp as you know sits right in front of the color wheel so perhaps it popped and fragments of the lamp ended up on, near or around the color wheel

BP96-00674A is part number for L3 color wheel. BP96-00822J is the engine part #.

So don't. Just retire the set and move on with a newer cheaper better set with warranty.

I have Samsung DLP TV 50 inch HL-P5063W

First thing to look at is the color wheel this model uses--usually it will make a high pitched fan like sound but can make a grinding sound also.

If it slows down from the 12,000 or so RPM speed it will cause color issues.

HAVE GRINDING OR HIGH PITCHED SOUND?

Samsung HL-P5063W makes a whining sound and then goes off

The most common failure in the DLP that makes a whining sound would be the color wheel. They cost about $135 + labor because I wouldn't advise changing it by yourself.
