Question about Canon GL2 Mini DV Digital Camcorder
I just purchaed a used Canon Gl2. It does not rewind or fast foward. When I try it moves for a couple of seconds than says Remove the cassette. Is this something in the settings or does it need repair. Thanks.
The idler and drive assembly gears are defective and need to be replaced. this is a common problem on dmc2 chassi's.

I doubt it is something in the settings. Step 1: The tape may be causing the camera to "reject" it. In other words, it thinks there is something wrong with the tape so it is warning you with the error message. Perhaps the cassette has been damaged slightly. This error can also happen when the tape has been used often or taped over a few times. MiniDV tapes are not media that can be recorded over and over again. Solution: Try using a new tape. 2. The camera may need to be cleaned. The recording heads may be dirty and it doesn't matter what tape is placed in there. Solution: Purchase a cleaning tape from a consumer electronics store. Make sure you read the directions very carefully. These are cheap fixes. If it works, great. It would also be good to know what it CAN do. Does it play in the VCR mode? Does it record? And can you view it in the VCR mode? Has it changed in any other way, i.e. is it making a strange noise when it starts to rewind, when before it didn't? Let me know how it goes.

Here is a helpful video explaining the problem you are having.

It says in the GL2 Manual that it is due to condensation, either from moving from one temperature range, to another, and/or humidity. It says to leave the tape out and the tape carrier open until it seems the humidity has gone.Ive had the same problem. Dont listen to anyone that says "you need to get it repaired" like the response above mine, because they are trying to scam you. It is a simple fix and I hope you succeed at fixing it.
