How long ago did you purchase the printer? Does it have the "Certified for Windows Vista" logo on the box? If not, it won't work with Vista at all. I checked Microsoft's Hardware Compatibility List and it says the HP Photosmart C3100 series is *certified* with Vista, however it does not say it *works* with Vista. http://winqual.microsoft.com/HCL/ProductDetails.aspx?m=v&g=d&cid=900&sv=&f=86p&pn=HP%20Photosmart%20C3100%20series&oid=31 Per the link, the driver may be part of the Windows Update. Give that a try, as well as HP's website. Otherwise you may need to take it back and exchange it for a Vista-certified printer. Let me know how it works out!

Installed updates now HP printer won't accept refilled ink

HP does not recommend refilling thier tanks, their print heads are built in to the cartridge so if you refilled it before resetting the tanks you will have to go to www.hp.com and run the trouble shooting tool for free to fix your issue. you may have to replace the catridge.

Hp laserjet 3100 is "found" with each new boot but works okay

not sure what version of windows your version but this should work for pretty much any version.

1. open start menu
2. right click my computer
3. select manage
4. select device manager under system tools
5. look for the device that has the yellow ! on it or says unknown device.
6. right click and select disable

I bet its trying to install a drive for another function of your printer.
You could try putting in the disk and when that box comes up tell it to search the disk for a driver then you may get additional functionality from your printer (such as scanning).

Dell 3100cn Printer

Hi Lillie,

No, the message for RAM disk has nothing to do with your issue. RAM disk is an option for that printer, but most users do not have that option, and if you accessed the menu for the 3100 on most of the machines in use you would receive that same error.

Although the printer itself shows " ready to print", this does not mean that your computer is communicating with the printer. In Fact, that message would show up even if you did not have it attached to any computer, as long as it was turned on and passed the self test.

More then likely the problem lies within the computer, NOT the printer.

To test the printers functionality, try printing a menu item, from the "reports" menu. Select either the printer settings, or the PCL Fonts report. When selected, the printer should print which ever report you selected.

One thing you may want to check is to see if there are any print jobs " locked up " in the print spooler on your computer, and also make sure that the printer is not set to "work offline".

To do this, open the control panel, go to your "printers" folder, then double click on your printer.
This will open up the printer information for that printer. If there are any jobs in the print queue, they will show up here.

if there are any print jobs stacked up, usually it is the top job that had a problem and is "stuck". This will prevent any job sent after that to be held, pending release of that one.

single click the top job and either restart the job, or delete it.

Also, make sure that the printer is not set to work offline by clicking on "printer" from the menu and ensure that work offline is not checked.

Good luck.

Router sends my printer invalid ip address

Wow what a mess, this is hard to explain easily?

All network printers should be set to a Static IP address. (Fixed address). Somewhere in your Printers network settings you will find this, it should not be set to DHCP...

Your router is probably set to DHCP, which reassigns all address.

Your computer will send out a communication telling everyone on the network the PCs new address...

Your network printer will not do this.

In your PC in the Print Driver Properties you will see Ports which should have the IP address of your printer, which is a TCP/IP port.
Which will stay the same as when you installed the printer.

When your printer reboots and a new is address assigned if set to DHCP, the pc will still look for the old address, while the printer has a new address.

That is why the printer should have a static IP address assigned from within the machine
The gateway, subnet mask should reflect the same as your network. (The gateway does not have to be in there to work by the way, if you’re using it on the same router)

If you reinstalled the printer after your system rebooted, you probably have the printer installed more than once.

If you do not set the printer to a static IP address this probably will happen again when it is restarted or there is a loss of electricity.

Hooking a patch cable directly from your PC to Your printer will not work; it will work with a crossover cable and a few minor changes to the settings.

USB and Network use different protocols. TCP/IP uses a completely different addressing system.

I don’t think your problem was with your network, as much as it is with the Static address of the printer.

If it is printing for you now the easiest thing to do here to prevent future hassle...
print the network settings

go into your printers IP Networking settings and set the IP address and Subnet as what the printed page is ( I usually turn off DHCP, IPV4, IPV6, NetBIOS etc, and only have tcp/ip on, if your machine offers this?)

Good Luck
