Generally you want to set the focus on the subject of your picture. If you're taking a portrait, you want the focus on the subject's eyes.

Why are my photos out of focus??

Check your settings - try taking sots with the different focus settings and compare. If all photos show some identical signs, you need a fix on your camera. If, for one photo taken with the auto focus settings, look different, you need more practice with your camera.

Won't focus properly on auto focus.

Depending on your lens, you may have an AF/MF switch. Make sure it's set to AF for Auto Focus. Try increasing your light levels. Does focus work in a good light setting?

You should have a button that looks like a matrix. Press this button to set your focus point. Use the joy-stick like wheel to select the focus point. Press it to select Auto Focus points.

All the pictures are blurry the auto focus isn't working

You may have put the camera on manual focus. Two ways to do that.
1. There is a switch on the lens which allows you to select auto or manual focus. Be sure the switch is set on A or A/M. If it's on M, you are on manual focus.

2. In you menus, there might be a mode which is manual focus. Look in your manual index under Focus, manual. There might be a setting in the Focus Mode menu.

You can also try resetting your camera. This will put most things back to factory default mode, including the focus mode.

When playing around with controls, go step by step through the manual and try things out. Be sure to set the control you were playing with back to default unless you really understand that setting.

The lens will not focus automatically but will focus manually on the kodak EOS rebel XSi

Check your settings in the camera menu. Make sure that auto focus is selected. Also set the focus for OTHER than spot focus. (Spot focus can be real touchy.)
Still no autofocus? you will need service from Canon.

My Fuji S5100 now fails to properly focus. I have

1 ensure that your camera is not set in Macro mode test by taking a picture of a subject very close up ie. 10 - 15 cm if the image is in focus then you may be set in macro mode.
2 if lens is removeable ensure it is fitted properly. remove the lens and refit ensureing the connectors are clean.
3 ensure the switch on the lens or camera is set to AF for auto focus.
4 suspect autofocus sensor is defective if you try to focus on subjects which are close and far away and you do not hear to camera re-setting the focus then it is in manual focus or the focus sensor may be defective or in need of adjustment.

5 recommend specialist have a look at this problem.

Focus out

You must have your focus set to a single focus point. Try changing your focus setting to automatically set for the 11 points.

As a quick solution, for group shots, move the dial to Auto. Hope this helps.

Front focus problem

Hey hubro,
This switch is used to set a focus point to so you can quickly focus to the preset distance. What you have to do is set the switch to the on or on with sound setting then focus to the distance you want to preset and then press the set button. While this switch is set to the on or on with sound setting you just turn the focus preset ring which should be in front of the focusing ring and the camera should focus to the preset distance. I hope this helps!

Sincerely,
Allan

Is the focus area switchable?

The focus area can be set for Wide Focus Area or Spot Focus Point. When selecting the Spot Focus Point, the DiMAGE A1 can be set "Flex Focus Point (FFP) ".
