sounds like you have a boot sector virus, if you have a Win98SE start up disk you can boot to it then first try running scandisk on drive

can you please supply me with more detail. Do you get a blue screen when trying. are you trying to reformat the computer and putting a clean install of windows. is it XP or vista.

The problem is that your XP cd doesn't have the correct drivers for your hard drive built-in. You need to modify the cd in order to make it work correctly.

your windows install is screwed up. i'd dig up your Windows XP CDand pop that in and do a repair install. if it still doesnt work then i'd enter the bios setup (hit F10 on compaq boot screen) and look in there for "Hard Drive Test" and run that. be aware it will take 70 mins on a 60GB hard drive, and longer for a bigger drive. if the hard drive passes the test then you may want to boot up the XP cd and do a fresh install, opting to format the drive. be aware that formatting WILL delete anything and everything on the laptop.

if the hard drive fails the test, then obviously you need to get a replacement drive and reinstall Windows on that. if the hard drive failed, any data on it is most defenetly toast.
