lens extended, won't respond with rechargeable batteries I've always used or with new ones. Appears dead as a rock. Any suggestions other than replacing batteries and cleaning contacts?

I am using rechargeable batteries and have a lot of problems with them. Sometimes they work and sometimes not. I put the camera in pieces but couldn't find anything wrong. But then I noticed that the length is a little different, so I have four that is working and eight a little shorter that don't work. When I push 'On' the lens come out and the screen says "Pentax Optio" against a blue background but when I push any of the buttons nothing happens and after a few seconds the screen goes black. Same thing happens if I push 'Off.'

Re: Pentax Optio E10
Do not interfere with the lens as it is out -dont try to push it back- this will wreck it.
Take the batteries out and with the eraser at the end of a pencil polish the contacts at the bottom the the battery chamber.
Do the same with the contacts in the lid
Try a further new set of batteries.
Insert them. close the lid
switch on
What happened?
Nothing
Then switch on again and this time gently push ther battery compartment lid.
What happened?

You can try to contact a Pentax certified repair centre close to you. First ask then what it will cost, to rep;ace the cover, then decide for repair or a new camera.
the batteries needed for the cameras are quite high powered
though the batteries show that they are fuly charged most times they have lost their actual capacity of power storage in them so not being able to supply enough to start the camera best way to test this is to start the camera on preview mode if this works then you will need to buy a new set of rechargable batteries, i would suggest to take batteries in the range of 2000MAh to 2500MAh and
the normal batteries will not be able to sustain long even for normal lens open and retract functions, instead of normal batteries try LR6 varieties (eg: Duracell, Energizer, etc)
hi. me again. flicked the gray lens thing sticking out hard enough with my finger as i got pissy with it and WALLA! it works now. just thought id let you know.
