First take backup of all necessary data.. then keep your Window Installation Disc with you and..

then Run the PC with Command Prompt Mode by pressing F8 key during restart..

A black window will appear and showing option to choose Command prompt..

then type and enter the command:

if this system has not be formatted completely earlier then you can reformat it without a cd.dell systems come with an option of pc restore.reboot the system and after pressing power button press ctrl and then press F11 it will give you the restore option and this will take you back to the original setting.but don't forget to back up your data before formatting.

How to format DELL Vostro 1014 Laptop
If you wish to FORMAT your hard drive so you can re install the OS.
Put your Windows disc into the CD/DVD drive, boot the computer and press F2 (if that does not work try CTRL+ALT and enter) to enter the bios. Change the boot order to boot from the CD drive first.

Follow the onscreen instructions to Install the OS, you should get the option to delete the existing partitions and then to FORMAT.

How do you format the hard drive on Dell Inspiron 1000. I have the restore system disk and don't have anything on it worried about losing...just need to format and start fresh..it's got too many issues and...
I'd put ubuntu on it, if it's a inspiron 1000, should run ok. If you have the restore disks from dell, just turn it on, pop in the cd, then reboot, the pc should boot from cd, then just follow the promps, make sure you delete all partitions, format thorough (not quick NTFS), use the whole disk for windows
