TR440 Breadman won't begin kneading once "start" button is pushed
I just inherited a bread maker from my sister-in-law. She said she has used the machine maybe 10 times. I cleaned it up...and used it as per instruction manual directions this past week with a few problems...the bread did not fully turn out..didn't rise very well. I was making the yogurt wheat bread, but using soy-yogurt and didn't have the appropriate flours (used whole wheat and whole wheat pastry flour, as I didn't have bread flour and gluten). So, off to the store, found bread flour and gluten.
Take 2: tried today to make a different recipe, light whole wheat bread, with honey, wheat, whole wheat pastry, bread and gluten flours. Put the ingredients in the machine, set the select button on 5 for a 1 & 1/2 lb. whole wheat bread loaf, and pressed "start". But, the kneading did not begin as it did with the first loaf. After an hour I checked through peaking thru the window...still no kneading. I unplugged the machine. Checked the pan, yes it was tightly placed in...the kneader was also in place...and tried again resetting. I even let if "cool down" as suggested in the troubleshooting section of the instruction manual. I tried essentially, to start this bread 3 or 4 times..with no success. I tried a separate setting. Still no change. Yet, the time for the selected setting would list and count down. No, I had not set the timer at all.
Any thoughts or ideas on what the problem could be?
Looking forward to getting this right, and baking bread soon!
Mindy
P.S. I eventually made the bread in a cake pan after punching by hand, letting rise, kneading, rising and baking again. It turned out fine...but, I was looking forward to the machine doing all that work!
I have the same problem with two different breakmakers. They will operate well in the "basic white bread" mode; but when I chose "whole wheat" the function does nothing but preheat - no kneading. Thank you for the great tip re: warm-up taking 30 minutes! I am sure I did not let it warm up that long. I will try again and make sure I time the warm-up period before troubleshooting and/or restarting!
I am surprised this little piece of info. isn't in the manual either! And if the problem persists I will just make it in the oven as I did before (I too don't want to waste anything)
Thank you so very much! Mindy

Hi Mindy.......it takes 30 minutes to PREHEAT this silly machine for wheat bread. I thought I did something wrong, too........I stopped it twice after it preheated for about 15 minutes. I did not want to waste anything so I let it stay in the machine.....I just went to check the machine and it started after 30 minutes of preheating.
try getting some info from pilsbury on making bread in the breadmachine. they have tip and guidlines for substitution. ya might want to ask yourself, did the dough in the machine look the same as the hand kneaded dough when you began the bake cycle? it's important that it "look" right. if not, you need to add the proper liquid/flour the same as making by handtry getting some info from pilsbury on making bread in the breadmachine. they have tip and guidlines for substitution. ya might want to ask yourself, did the dough in the machine look the same as the hand kneaded dough when you began the bake cycle? it's important that it "look" right. if not, you need to add the proper liquid/flour the same as making by hand

Do you have your owners manual and have you baked bread in your machine before? Just want to be sure that you know the stages that the machine goes through. The first mixing and kneading stage in a tr444 will take up to 15 minutes before it stops on its own. It will then let the dough rest for about 1/2 hour before the 2nd knead begins. It takes almost 4 hours for your machine to go through all the stages before your baked bread is finished.
I just purchased this 2 days ago and started to use it. I noticed the bread pan would wobble and was noisy during the kneading cycle. On the second use the paddle came off during the kneading cycle. Being a service technician all my life, I started to analyze the problem. I was previously surprised how loose the bread pan fitted into the bread maker and suspected there should be something to support the pan and hold it in place. I could not see anything obvious, but after looking carefully I noticed spring clips on the bottom of the bread pan, and also mating spring clips in the bottom of the bread maker. If I pushed the bread pan down fairly hard into the bread maker the bread pan would snap firmly in place. This stopped the wobbling during the kneading cycle and the paddle coming off. I could not find anywhere in the manual where it explained the bread pan must be pushed firmly down into place until it snaps in. The manufacturer should explain this to their customers on their website.
Your paddle is probably worn out and has too much play in it. Some play is necessary to get it off for cleaning but it shouldn't be so loose it is coming off during kneading.
Are you making a different kind of bread than you did the first time?. If so some machine programs have a delay before they start kneading such as the whole wheat cycle. Also some machines delay the kneading process while they warm up the ingredients. If it is colder where you live now than itw was 6 days ago that could be a factor.
Put this number (390128697545) into an ebay search and it will pull one up. Please be advised this will fit the TR440 but will Not fir the TR440C. They are different. If you need the C model, that same seller has the TR440C paddle in another listing.
I can't promise you that this is the solution, but some of the cycles have a relatively long preheat cycle where the bread machine just sits there. Make sure that you are on cycle #1 and it should start kneeding right away.
