I have a hp deskjet 648c printer that was working perfectly until yesterday. I went to print something, got an error message, and the amber light started blinking. Normally, when I turn the printer on or when it is on, both cartridges are not visible, as they sit all the way to the right of the lift up see through cover. Now, as soon as I turn the printer on, the cartridges will go all the way to the right for a second and then move to the left and stop, both being visible. Then the amber light starts blinking. I am guessing that if the cartridges would sit in the position they always have, that it would start printing normally again. As I said, it was working perfectly, and just started doing this as I clicked on print. Can anyone help me? Thanks.

Thank you for providing the hp link for this problem. It didn,t exactly fix things, but it did lead to the correction of the problem. The hp link said that the problem was probably related to the ink cartridges and the contacts, and not the printer or the software, and to physically clean the contacts and reinstall the cartridges. So, I did that, but it didn't work, Sitting here in frustration, I thought maybe one or both cartridges inexplicably went bad. I had an extra black cartridge here with very little ink, so I took the other cardtridge (which was pretty full) out and installed the spare. Lo and behold, the printer started working again.Thank you for providing the hp link for this problem. It didn,t exactly fix things, but it did lead to the correction of the problem. Try uninstalling and reinstalling your printer. Then use the button on the printer itself that prints a test page. If that doesn't work, then there might be something stuck in your printer. When you open the cover, look for something unusual or loose in there.
Disconnect the power cord from the back of the product.
Remove the rear access door. Press in the tab on the left of the door, and then pull out the door.

Gently
pull the paper out of the rollers. If printing labels, make sure that a
label did not detach from the label sheet while passing through the
printer.
Wipe the paper rollers with a lint-free cloth lightly moistened with distilled or bottled water.
Rotate the rollers with your fingers to clean all the way around.

The strip connected to the printer head is bad.normally the printhead is supposed to stay to the right all the way and you said now its the opposite which says the strip is bad and wont allow it to print. youll need a new printer
Remove the cartridges from your printer.then turn the printer off .remove the power wire from the back of the printer.wait for exactly 1 minute and reconnect everything properly.then ON the printer.and reinsert the cartridges.if it shows the same problem.its quite possible that the cartridges r faulty and needs replacement.as the circuit of the cartridges get faulty any time.if gets short or cut in between.in that case replacement of the cartridges is necessary.
thanks.

Error message? Just put something on the scanner glass and press the print button in the printer itself, leave the computer alone. Did it work? if so... there's something wrong with the HP software, re-install. That machine takes copies without the computer on, so, it should work.
Delete the printer icon from the Printer and faxes folder; Disconnect the USB cable (If connected through USB); Put in the driver disc; Goto my computer; Right click on the black HP logo click on Explore;
Click on UTIL(Folder)- click on CCC(Folder)- Click on Uninstallation L1 ;
Take out the CD restart the computer
Is your printer online? Go to control panel, check your printer list. Does the icon for this printer appear to be somewhat see through or opaque? If so, right click and ensure it's listed as "online".
Here's a great link for troubleshooting you need to do for your printer:

Do you have the installation disk for either printer?
If so simply reinstall over the existing ones.
If you do not- Go to Start/printers and Faxes
Clcick on install new printer.
Select from list
Select make
Select model
select OK
