Question about Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD2500KS 250 GB Hard Drive
I have have my 250 Gig Western Digital harddrive for a couple of years now. From about two weeks ago I trien connecting it and it became extremely slow to response, causing my PC to freeze. Eventually it started making a knocking sound and would not load as a drive. I would get the inidcation that a USB Mass storage devise is connected, but no further activity i.e. another drive or accessibility. I am running windows XP SP2 and have tried accessing drives from other machine, both desk tops and lap tops. The same problem still exists. Anyone out there who can advise or has a solution?
Try to disconnect SATA/IDE cable leaving just the the power and see how it goes. If still clicks try another power supply unit in another computer. If still doesn't help there's an option with freezer but it rarely helps.
Most likely the heads are gone bad and you need expensive professional data recovery if data really matters. Quite a common problem with WD :(

The knocking sound means that the 'arm' on the inside of the harddrive is going out. unfortunately there's nothing you can really do about it, you may be able to get your data off, but otherwise I'd say it's trash. sorry
