My RCA Scenium lamp (model # 260962) burned out last summer. We took the TV to a service shop 30 miles away. It was replaced in a few days and we took the set home( about $700 total cost ). About 2 months ago the TV began to lose the picture periodically ...while the front little blue "on" indicator blinks 4 or 5 times...the screen just goes black, with no interruption to sound. Then after about 20 seconds the picture re-establishes its connection and comes back: I can hear the lamp wind up before a few flashes of diagonal "interference", the picture returns . I'm guessing I got a bad replacement lamp. Is that likely/possible? -- RobTor
Robor, The part number you listed in your description of the privious repair is the lamp & housing replacement for your TV. At Vance Baldwin that part is $614.00 including a $200.00 core which is refunded when the repair shop returns the old assembly. So, while the previous repair was $700 at least $450-$475 of that was parts including shipping. That's my guess, check it against your invoice. The next one that burns out you can do yourself - but you won't escape the parts cost above. On the present problem it's probably the ballast power board. Like a fluorescent light the lamp in your unit requires a ballast and a power board for the ballast to regulate voltages to it. This is not something I would recommend you change yourself - take it in and have it done. I know first how heavy that monster is, I've hauled several of them into my shop. We use a forearm forklift, a device consisting of two straps, which allow a couple of guys to move TV's like this with greater ease. Tritronics was selling them for about $20.00 dollars plus shipping and I'm sure there are other places where you can get them. As a personal note: From what I've seen on the Fix-ya board so far a large persentage of people write-in hoping to find that maybe they missed something simple that they can do themselves. A small percentage are those that would rather you to give them a scapal so they can do the appendectomy themselves. And my guess would be you are the former. Let me assure you that it's nothing you missed. And that it is one you will need to bite the bullet on and take to the shop. Good luck! Bill

As techman said, it'd suspect the ballast, but it may very well be just a bad ballast as opposed to a faulty connection.

THERE IS A BAD CONNECTION IN THE BALLAST CIRCUIT THAT LIGHTS THE LAMP, OR THERE IS A BAD SOCKET.

I'll try looking into the IF circuit; But I have no idea what that is.
Taking the TV (at over 250 lbs) back to the repair shop is a major task. It was something I was tryng to avoid, but if I can't do the IF circuit myself, at home, then I'll just have to take it there.
One issue with the solution tho'... The sound is fine... when I lose the picture, the sound is NEVER interrupted; just the picture is lost. Is that still the IF circuit?
Pls advise.
Thanks to all of you for your suggestions.
I'v concluded that at my minimal knoledge level for this stuff, I'll be taking it to a shop for the repairs.
I'll repond to each of you when it's completed. Interestingly theTV hasn't been blacking out for 2 days and evenings now. Five minutes ago it just blacked out again. Does anyone think that unplugging it might "re-boot"?
