When I go to print an error message appears saying:
Service error 5100.
It tells me to turn off printer and try again but it didn't work.
All I did was change colour cartridge as normal but now this is happening.

look up the printer tray sir.... if you see a lots of paper inside the tray removed it.. then try again printing... or else... try to change the printer mother board...
It means that the waste ink absorbers are filled and you will need to replace them and take the machine to a service center.. Well thats what Canon says,, then when you get there they say buy a new one..
Any way forget them try this.. 1.) unplug machine (power cable from back of printer. 2.) hold the power button down and plug cable back in.the printer light will stay on ,, 3.) still holding power,, press the paper feed button.. light will change to orange 4.) press paper feed button again.. It will turn to green 5.) release power button and enjoy..
Depend on the the firmware skip step 4...
That will bypass canons firmware and reset the counters.. Print as you will now..
error code 5100 means print head temperature rise error. In other word the print head is overheated. First, turn off your printer for some minutes (it recommended to take about 30 secs or more) and let it's cooled down. Turn on again. If the problem still persist, try to check whether the print head is good or not by comparing with another print head. Be carefully, sometimes this problem is caused by short circuitry inside the print head.
Service Error 5100

Hi You can Try Same old errors
Error Code 5100
Solution 1: Clean the timing strip.
Solution 2: The purge cap (the white sliding mechanism that the print head parks to when it's not in use) may be not lubricated well enough .
Lubricate the sliders with some white grease (don't get it on the small wipers or the black caps); this repair probably require to remove the right panel off of the printer to gain access to the purge mechanism. All The Best: Pineworks
Service Req xyyyy A Controller error or print engine error detected. Turn off the printer. Wait at least 5 seconds and then turn it back on.
