The backpressure or suction pressure varies with the load and the ambient temoerature of the unit. best way to make sure that your charge is correct is to pull refrigerant out and evacuate aand weight in new refrigerant with a scaloe.

Need to know what freon of a 6 year old amana prestege altra takes.

Its actually called Refrigerant. Freon is a manufacture name like shell gas or chevron gas though they are 89 octane. You should have a plate on your unit that will read the refrigerant type. 6 years old was during the transition of a lot of different refrigerants. Common ones would be r-22, r-410a, r-134a, r-407c. Basically look for the r-number and that would be the refrigerant type. Many units can be made to run different refrigerants though they are the same unit. Its important to get the refrigerant right due to oils pressures ect.

I have an Amana bottom freezer refrigerator model bc20tw that runs all the time. The freezer is cold but not enough to harden ice cream.

Hi,

Many times a freezer and/or refrigerator do not work right because of a dirty condenser coil...there are also many other things that can go wrong.

Our Amana Refridgerator's (this model), stopped cooling this weekend. Had a repair guy come by and he told us the compressor is shot and somthing about the factory seal for the freon had apparently given...

No you have to be cfc certified to replace the compressor. The freon used is either R-12 or R-134a common automotive grade 134a freon will not work properly in a refrigerator. You also need to replace the filter dryer sometimes it requires special solder. You will also need torches oxygen cetylene mix or map gas. Then you will need to check for leaks, pull a vacuum on the system making sure you get all the air out of the system because if their is to much air in lines unit will not cool. Then you will need special gauges to measure the amount of freon that goes inside the refrigerator. If something happens and you dont know how to properly read the gauges something could happen that would be even a greater out of pocket exspence to repair the refrigerator. Their is also the risk of damaging the wires or plastic water lines. My advice is to call around to some other companies to check on getting price of compressor replaced and installed. That will let you know if it is practical versus buying a new fridge or trying to purchase a used unit. Not a practical do it yourself project usually takes 1-3 hours to replace and get back going.

I have an Amana BC20TW refrigerator with a bottom freezer. It seems to be running all the time. I raised the temperature dial to make it warmer and it still runs too much. Put velcro on the bottom freezer...

Accuracy is important --Use a digital thermometer to monitor freezer and fridge temps. Fridge should be around 40 and freezer around zero and then take it from there and draw conclusions

How do I install compressor for amana refrigerator. Can a home handy man install a compressor? Do I need freon?

Hi.The compressor motor is connected to the refrigerant system, which is not user serviceable. It will be necessary to have the compressor serviced, or replaced by a qualified technician. During this process, the pressurized system will need to be re pressurized. This will require special tools, and regulative equipment, as well. This can be very dangerous, and that is why I prefer to give proper advise on this type of repair. Kindly, contact your nearest service tech.
