SOURCE: Computer will not start, audible alarm every 5 seconds

Check your power supply. A beep every 5 seconds or so generally indicates a problem with power supply voltages.

1 long beep, 2 short beeps

This page
http://support.asus.com/pcassistant/pdf/BeepTable_en-us.pdf
suggests hat for Asus systems, 1 long beep, two short beeps is characteristic of a RAM fault. The video card does not determine the beeps, it is the system BIOS of your computer which determines the beep codes (and what the fault is of course)
If your computer is not an ASUS, but some other brand but with an ASUS video card the beep code may mean something different.

Asus mainboard p5gd1 - fm/s motherboard, giving bios fault d0 or d4 Need ot know the bios type and codes list

Are you by chance using a mainboard diagnostic card? Asus use beep codes to indicate different bios issues. I'm almost certain it is the Award Bios used on their boards.

Type your model number in the "Input Model to Search" box in the upper left corner.

Select ALL in the "Select Category" drop down menu. Click "Search Info".

There you have 2 choices...A8N-E or Coolpipe version. Choose yours.

You will then have to select your operating system. Click "Search".

Then you will have your choice of drivers, manuals, Bios, etc. to download.

Replacing an a8ne with another

Howard,

Windows is likely to realise that its a new Motherboard wheter you replace it with an identical unit or not as each motherboard has certain unique identifiers that Windows looks for (Not all of which are known exactly)

My advice would be to get yourself the better of your available choices of motherboards within your price range, as this would likely give you a longer lifetime for your new hardware and upgradability. Then try to reinstall Windows XP with your current key code. IF windows has a problem with the code it will give you an option to register by telephone, when you do this try to get through to a live operator at Microsoft explain to them that your old Motherboard died and you replaced it. They will then likely give you the code to activate Win XP with your new MoBo.

Hope this helps
