Top Shelf of Freezer Not Cooling

I have an old Whirlpool eev161e Manual Defrost freezer that cools on all of the bottom shelves and the top coil on the inside ceiling of the freezer does not get cold. There was a lot of ice built up in the corner where the coil supply lines go as well. I defrosted the freezer and let it set a few days and I just plugged it in tonight. Now the top ceiling element is getting really cold and the rest are not as cold. What should I do?

Now that it has been plugged in for almost 24 hours, the other elements are cool as well. I also noticed that the freezer was not level. I leveled it.

I noticed that the door was not sealing at the top, a good reason for the top element to not be cooling.

Also, the very small tubing coming from or going to the top element was bent so much it looked like it was blocked. I straightened it.

Now the big question, should I put food back in there, or should I wait and see how it does first?

Our upright quit working, bottom shelf freezes, top does not very well. While shopping for a new freezer, salesman told us the life of an appliance is about 10 to 12 years. Ours is 15 , so instead of putting money into a repair, we replaced it.

Freezer defrosted within a day, freezer was still plugged in and temperature was turned between 3 and 4.

Sounds like you may have a refridgerant blockage in the system. it may need a regas to see if it can be unblocked, as this is not a quick job it may cost you but phone around on the cost/feasibility of it. it may be just as well to get a new or second hand freezer.

make sure the door is now fully sealing then put some bowls of water in there at various places to gauge wether each is cooling evenly. if so, and no further ice is forming, i think it would be ok to replace all your food. tone.

Danby DFF282WDB stopped cooling - light comes on - any troubleshooting we can do?

My name is Peter. I am a retired field service refrigeration technician.

You are locked into the defrost mode. This is when every 8-10 hours your unit will shut down for 20-30 minutes and your defrost heater comes on and defrost your freezer cooling (Evaporator) Coil. During this cycle everything shuts down except for the light.

Your controls are usually located on the top of your fresh food section. On the bottom of your controls, near the front, left hand side there is a round hole. This is where your defrost timer is located.

With a large flat head screw driver turn clockwise. You will hear a clicking sound. Turn slowly one click a time until your unit turns on. This unit will have to be replaced. Until it is replace manually turn it off every 10 hours for 20 minutes.

Note the round stub on the left.

The top two shelves are not freezing and the food on those shelves and that area of the door have defrosted. The bottom seems to be freezing. I can hear the fan running and do not feel any drafts from

Obviously that freezer is not achieved the required temperature. There are several reasons for that:
- Defrosting system is not working, which leads to accumulation too much ice on the evaporator that prevents heat transfer and reduces air circulation despite the fan is running.
- The problem with draining condensate after defrosting cycle which also leads to accumulation of ice.
- Leaking gas from the cooling system (reduced cooling capacity)
- Faulty compressor

Top half of upright freezer is warm

Hello Karen;

My name is Peter. I am a retired field service refrigeration technician.

The top half of your freezer is warm because your cooling (evaporator) coil is on the bottom.

With your unit there are generally two cooling problems:

1.) Frozen Drain - You freezer will go through a defrost cycle every 8-10 hours. When this occurs, everything shuts down with the exception of your lights. Your defrost heater turns on for about 20-30 minutes, defrost you cooling coil and them turns your unit back on.

Most common, is that you have a frozen drain. If you have a frozen drain, when your unit goes through the defrost cycle, if your drain is plugged then the condensate builds up on your cooling coil and restricts the air flow. Use a hair dryer and melt the ice.

2.) Freezer fan motor is bad - Your freezer fan motor may be bad. This is easily replaced.

Ok, Lets get it done. I have faith in you.

a.) Unplug your unit.

b.) With a screw driver remove the 6 screws holding the bottom cover. You control may be in the way.

c.) I know you can do this. Remove the back cover. Is you cooling coil blocked with Ice? Defrost with a hair dryer. Do not use metal tools, you may damage the cooling coil.

b.) After defrost, Is you cooling fan running. You can do this as well. There are only two contacts to remove and a ground wire. If it is not running purchase a new one.

I have faith in you Karen. Call me and I will walk you through this.

Why is the top shelf of whirlpool upright freezer not freezing?

Just had this issue. Freezer is packed usually & suspected airflow. Emptied bottom 2 shelves & vent strip was solid frost. Bottom 2 shelves were filled w/ solid roasts & other solid large items. Used blowdryer & currently waiting to see if it begins freezing top shelf.

Meat on top two shelves unthawed while bottom two shelves is frozen and has stayed frozen for three days. Air does not appear that cold coming out of top of freezer.

hi... is the evap fan motor running in the freezer ? if it is then check the the evap coils if it is completely frosted then u need to check the defrost timer .if that is good then check the defrost limiter that is on the evap coils and if that is good then u got a bad defrost heater. now if there is frost only on the bottom or top of evap coils u may have sealed sys problem if u got an ? feel free to write me..

I have severe ice forming in my freezer.

On this unit the shelves are the cooling coils and carry the refrigerant (freon) through the system. They will attract the warm moist air by design, so if you have an air leak in the door or elsewhere it will tend to build up there first.

This being said you need to check something else first. Make sure the other shelves are cold. If they are frosted and cold like normal then you most likely have a door that is not closing all the way or a bad seal. If the lower shelves are not cold then you have a system problem, typically a refrigerant (freon) leak that is causing the top shelf to absorb most of the work and not enough refrigerant to flow to the bottom shelves.

I hope this helps

Frigidaire upright freezer ffu21k2cw1 has frost on the top shelf , and on a thin coil leading up to that shelf, but no where else. The freeze feels warm. We have tried to vaccuum the bottom of it, but that...

I have bad news for you. EAch of your shelves is part of the evaporator coil. This is the coil where the liquid refrigerant expands into a vapor. If only one shelf has frost, and the other shelves no longer do, then you have a low side sealed system leak of your refrigerant. You could have it repaired, but that is a major service call, and to have it repaired properly to EPA regulations, it is quite expensive.

Top shelf of frigidare manual defrost freezer only freezing, other shelves are not cooling.

Is the condenser clean? If it is you may have a refrigerant leak or an inefficient compressor.

Upright freezer not cooling

The model number would help but it sounds like a sealed system leak or restriction. If thats the case I would not suggest trying this yourself. The water should freeze overnight and the frost should keep going to all the shelfs that have coils in them.
