I would say that the problem is with the video card, and yes, you may need to replace entire mainboard. Check your warranty period, if it is still valid, just go to service center to get it fix, no need to ask around.
When replacing mainboard, your files, softwares and settings is still in place. Unless you also replace the hard drive, you will have the computer back as is used to.

This would be due to a faulty sensor if it does not reboot and overheat then leave it be and buy a cpu cooler that goes underneathe the unit there around 20 bucks.

Were you having problems with the disk-drive?
Insert the "System Restore" disk into the CD-drive.
Restart the computer, and press DELETE to enter BIOS SETUP.
Change the "boot order", to make the CD-ROM the _first_ boot-device,
demoting the disk-drive to the _second_ boot-device.
Save the change, and restart the computer.
It will boot from the CD-drive, and you can choose to reinstall Windows or to start the "Windows Repair" task. First, try the "repair" option.

The Gateway MX6453 PC Notebook that I'm trying to boot up, shows NO display. I tried connecting it to an external monitor, using Fn F4 to tell it to go to that monitor, but still nothing.
The hard drive indicator is light and the fan is running. The "ON" button has a backlight in blue, and that is on. Tapping the On button does nothing - I have to hold it down to turn everything off - acting like it has Windows loaded.
Is this possibly a BIOS problem?

i was in the middle of a powerpoint slideshow when my screen went white. i wasnt able to use my keyboard so i turned my laptop off. when i turned it back on, i had the same problemn as you. i looked around at user forums and the best answer i have found is that the video chip is fried and that the only thing we can do is replace the entire motherboard. im wondering if replacing the motherboard will bring back my laptop exactly as it was before. i am very afraid of losing my files and software. i have a gateway mx6448.
