My Dyson DC07 suffers with poor pick-up of small 'bits' such as grit, paper scraps etc when in push/pull useage & when stood upright has poor suction from the wand. When the rubbish box is off the relevant pipe has lots of suction when I hold my hand over it. There is also a noise (which only appeared after the warranty expired) when its switched on almost sounding like a piece of paper flapping in the motor area. I have had it in bits, replaced/cleaned filters, belts, pipes & hoses, checked the motor and can find no obvious fault. The brushbar is free of hair etc and appears to have decent bristles. The guys at Dyson have been really helpful in sending new parts out even though the warranty is out but nothing has helped, so the next step is to send an engineer to service it at £70(ish)plus any parts used. I dont want to sound cheapskate, but £70 is a lot of cash to be told its beyond economical repair. Can anyone advise a possible fix please.
Try changing the cyclone cylinder (the part that collects the debris) get an old one off ebay, have had this sort of problem and changing this does the job.... ps have tried taking the old one apart and reassembling but still no good till replaced

Hi. Unless there is any electrical burning smell from the motor it wont be the carbon brushes. If when you remote vortex & wastebin the flapping noise stops it is definately NOT THE MOTOR. Try cleaning the vortex properly you may just be surprised how much rubbish gets clogged in it. http://dysonmanuals.inc.io/

Yes the flapping noise that you hear is the wire on the motor brushes that has protruded through the brush and touched the motor through wear and usually when this happens it destroys the motor and will need a replacement I have the same problem The motor is £42 and the brushes are £8 you also need a special long star screwdriver to access the motor this is a way of making you have it repaired at a dyson shop and pay about £70 labour a rip off or what? I can do the job in 20 mins so why the high price for labour
