Remove the knob by pushing in the small pin on the edge of the knob shaft. Then use a screwdriver in the small inset on the edge of the handle cover to pop the cover off. Tighten the 2 screws under the cover, replace parts.
On the inside side of the door knob, there is a decorative plate. Depending on which model door knobs you have, it is held on with a "set-screw" that might require an allen-wrench (looks like an 8-sided tool; usually in an L-shape), or just simply a screw driver, to loosen and remove it. Once you take the decorative plate off, there will be two very obvious screws that hold both sides (inside and outside) of the door knob together. Tighten these screws to tighten your knobs, then put the decorative plates back on again.
the weiser set should have a tiny hole in the knob or rosette around the knob. A paperclip or such can be pushed into the hole to unlock the door. That is the primary difference between a privacy lock and a security lock.

I am in the same boat here, mine is also in the middle of the door and my doorknob is broken. Ahh. I can still re-attach and open if I play with it. I have talked with several locksmiths who don't know what I'm talking about. I know my bolt mechanism was made by "Weiser" Home was built back in 1975. Have you had any luck at finding any help with this? From end of door to middle is 18" and the mechanism is 19".
