Just bought a brand new GE front load washer. Haven't used it yet. Does HE detergent absolutely have to be used in these washers? Is 2x ok to use. What's the difference?

Yes, we use 2x all the time, just fill the compartment 1/2 way full.  Works great!

Not using High Efficiency (HE) detergent.
Too much detergent was added.
Using too much 2X or 3X HE detergent
Solutions for over-sudsing:
  • Always use HE detergent in an HE washer. It is formulated to be a low-sudsing detergent and made especially for HE washers.
  • Be sure to use the correct amount of detergent. HE washers require only a small amount of detergent. Note: This amount may need to be adjusted for water hardness, load size, and soil level.
  • If using a 2X or 3X concentrated HE detergent, much less detergent is needed. If suds are seen, reduce the amount used.
  • If using a water softener, less detergent.
  • Make sure both Hot to Cold water hoses are connected properly at the faucets and at the washer.

I have a Kenmore Elite HE 4t front load washing machine. Code F ud is currently flashing and the door won't open. I've tried canceling but it just beeps and keeps flashing this code.

Remove the bottom panel. The tech sheet is located beside the white box to the left.088d3fc.jpg It gives diagnostic directions and failure codes. Suggest you clean the dispenser area up04f0b28.jpg and use the correct amount of HE detergent.
Seems to me like that is a suds detect:All front load washers require "HE" detergent (a low suds type detergent).

There are three commonly sold concentrations of HE type detergent.

HE : (2) Tablespoons Per Wash Load

HE 2X (double concentrated) : (1) Tablespoon

HE 3X (triple concentrated) : (1) Teaspoon

Most consumers follow the directions on the bottle or box of detergent--which is normally the correct thing to do. However, the amount recommended in nearly all brands of HE detergent are excessive & incorrect.

Additionally---using the correct amount of HE detergent will end issues with:

1) Musty Odors

2) 'LE" Errors (that can cleared by unplugging the washer)

3) L-O-N-G cycle times (longer than time displayed).
A 51 minute cycle can take 120 minutes to end.

4) Insuffificent Cleaning Results

5) Small water leaks behind the washer at the air vent.
(Suds oozes out during the spin cycle)

DETERGENT

You MUST use "HE" (High Efficiency-Low Suds) type detergent--but to use the correct amount. Nearly all brands of "HE" detergent have incorrect instructions. The correct amount is as follows:
HE: (2) Tablespoons Per Wash load
HE 2X (double concentrated) : (1) Tablespoon
HE 3X (triple concentrated): (1) Teaspoon
This reduces/prevents:
1) Musty Odor
2) "LE" Error/Interrupted Cycle
3) L-O-N-G Cycle Times (longer than time displayed)
4) Insufficient Cleaning Results
5) Small Water Leaks from the air vent behind the washer or at the
front door gasket
6) Damaged Sensors
7) Reduced Spin Speeds (laundry not spin-dried effectively)
These washers MUST have the right amount of the right stuff or they simply will give you lots of grief. The program can sense suds. It cannot pronounce your wash clean if it thinks their are suds. So it try's to fix the problem and ends up overworking itself.

What detergent brand do you suggest with front loading washer?

We use 2x ultra ALL due to having allergies in our family. It is free of perfumes and clear of dyes. We only use 1/4 of the cup (or less) that is supplied with soap container and double rinse. That's the great thing about these washers, they use alot less water and don't need the extra soap as well. Even with the double rinse, at the end of the full cycle, we still see an occasional soap bubble near the door. Hope this helps!

We have purchased a Maytag front loading high efficiency wash machine and were told to only use HE detergent. A neighbor said we could use 2x detergent. I thought the HE was lower sudsing than 2x and...

Use the HE rated detergent. The 2x detergent is a consentrated form of the old detergent formula. 2x is fine in a top load machine. Oversudsing will occur in front load machines causing F code errors.

Kenmore 417 44042400 Front Load machine Sears says does not exist

YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT. THE COMPANY SHOULD HAVE KNOWN ABOUT THIS. HERE IS MY SOLUTION: GO TO LOWE'S HARDWARE AND BUY A WASHER AND DRYER THERE. BUY THE GE BRAND. 3 YEARS AGO, WHEN OUR MAYTAG WASHER DIED, WE BOUGHT A NEW GE WASHER BEFORE MY FATHER DIED IN 2006. BUT CHECK INTO THAT. SAMSUNG WA2002 Washer

I had this problem when I used TIDE 2X detergent (thinking 2X was the same as HE). This happened several loads. I had bought several jugs of Tide (larger ones won't fit in drawer). Somehow grabbed HE one next time and didn't have this problem. Tried the 2X another time or two with again the washer stopping and LED lights on/unresponsive.

Solution was to not use anything but HE detergent.

Still having problem with Fabric Softener dispenser.

Fabric Softener remains after load done

You should make sure that your inlet to the machine flows with rather good pressure. I tell u this for your soft tray requires water, also your rinse.
