Hi, I am Steve, lets help solve your issue.
I am afraid the information you have been given is completely wrong. There is not such thing as plug and play in the android world. Android was initially developed for use on embedded devices and as such had no need to recognise external devices automatically. Version 2.1 (as installed on your device) is now quite old and cannot support it. Even the new version (froyo -2.2) does not support it.

Your device does come with a built in wireless adaptor, so you don't need a USB wireless adaptor.

How can I get a manual for my Coby tablet Mid9740?

Coby has closed their doors. One of the solutions I found was to do a hard reset which restores the tablet to out of the box condition. To do so, hold the power button & the volumn down button until the android figure appears. He'll be on his back with an open panel on his chest with a red triangle above it. Press the 'back' button and a menu appears with options of "reboot system now', 'apply update from external source', wipe data/factory reset', 'wipe data partition', and 'apply update from cache.' Scroll up & down the list using the volume up/down buttons and select the option you want using the power button.

It was sent to my father from the factory several years ago but asks for a password. How can I get into it?

Here you go...

Click on the link below:
http://www.manualowl.com/p/Coby/MID9740/Manual/180210

Once that web page is loaded, you'll see a light gray box with a small image of the owners manual, with a User Manual PDF text link just to the right of it, and the text beneath that link saying it's 121 pages.

Do not click anywhere else, especially not on the big green DOWNLOAD button. That loads you up with other software you don't really need.

This should get you going.

Unfortunately, Coby went out of business last summer (2013) and left a lot of people missing items they'd sent in for repair or replacement.

Trying to connect bluetooth wireless keyboard

The MID9740 doesn't have a bluetooth module so you can't connect anything to it by bluetooth.

Have a coby mid9740 tablet my father purchased. Internet runs so slow that stops and asks if we would like to exit program. Have tried different browsers and different app killers, this was suggested by...

Seems like thermal throttling, thermal throttling is a process where a device slows down in order to cool down. If the unit has a fan, the fan might be misaligned. If so, since it's out of warranty, I would suggest self-repair since I do not know any store that repairs those kind of devices.

FORGOT LOCK PATTERN ON A COBY KYROS

Turn the tablet all the way off, press and hold the VOL - and power at the same time for 8 to 9 seconds, it will show a green android guy with a system recovery menu. Use vol - to go down to Wipe Data/Factory Reset, press the power button to select it, go down to 'yes' to confirm, press the power button to select it, it will wipe the tablet, you then press the power button on 'reboot system'.

Coby tablets are not compatible with WIFI "HOTSPOTS", HOTSPOTS use ADHOC networking, which the tablet doesn't support.
