You are on the right track. Every "multi-format" DVD recorder, DVD burner and DVD-RW drive I have ever owned has had problems with one type of media or another. This is because the discs all have their own patented dye mixtures, and each is a little bit different.
I have problems using Memorex DVD-R discs on my Toshiba DVD recorder. The only drive I can get good results with Memorex DVD-R's is on my Memorex DVD drive.
For DVD-R media, I have had the best success with TDK DVD-R's.So far, they have worked on all my devices.
You may want to try DVD+R media. I use Memorex Lightscribe DVD+R and for dual layer recording, I use Ativa DVD+R DL discs, both of which have worked very well and I rarely have to throw one away.
It takes allot longer, but on my PC I always use the "verify" function to make sure I get a good copy.
Like you said the unit is capable of playing DVD RW and DVD-RW. However, some discs may not be compatible due to format of the files on the discs, software used and laser pickup. Some technologies used to record on discs can prevent optimal playback of the files by changing them which affects the ability of the player to read the file.

If you are burning the discs, I would suggest you different software, make sure the video/audio files are being converted to a DVD format that can be played on stand alone players.

IF YOU ARE USING ROXIO YOU HAVE TO DOWNLOAD THEIR PX ENGINE FIX BUT FIRST UNISTALL ROXIO AND THEN RUN THE ROXIO PX ENGINE FIX AND THEN REINSTTLL THE ROXIO.
Depending on the type of football game it is, the software is seeing some sort of copyright on it. If it is from the NFL, then you won't be able to put that video on DVD.
it will be easy for you to make a copy you can use programs like roxio or nero just put the disc in you dvd drive and a autoplay should pop up. if not go to my computer and poen it. useing the software to make CD`s DVD`s and MP3`s you should fined a disc copy then follow the on screen dierctions
