SOURCE: Singer 301a...sews on top of fabric

This is a tension adjustment problem. It's good to use two different colors of thread, like you did. From your description, the top thread (needle thread) tension needs to be tighter. As you tighten the tension of the top thread, you'll see that the top thread pulls the bobbin thread up into the fabric so it's no longer laying loose on the bottom of the fabric.

You'll need to have the pressure foot down when you tighten the tension. Tighten it a little, sew a practice seam, check to see what the stitch looks like. Tighten it a little more, sew, check, etc etc--until both top and bottom look the same--you shouldn't see much (if any) of the bobbin thread color on top of the fabric or the top thread color on the underside.

Let me know how this works for you, ok?

SOURCE: Singer 301a Bobbin troubles

I just had this problem, too - if you have the manual, check out page 15. If you have removed the throat plate, you need to make sure that the position finger on the bobbin case base enters a notch on the underside of the throat plate. Fixed my problem right away.

My Singer Touch Tronic sewing machine top thread won't release to stitch?

Question edited for clarity and maker.
Question moved to Singer.

It is either the bobbin tension or a problem with the catch hook not catching, or bobbin carrier not seated properly. Or it needs servicing and timing checked.

Brand new sewing machine wont stitch. Any ideas?!?!

I'm sure you've done this, but I'll just throw this out there. Did you pull the bobbin thread through the groove that slants on the left side of the needle plate starting from the upper left corner of the bobbin cover?

Singer touch sew 645

Singer website has a plethora of manuals to download, http://www.singerco.com/accessories/instruction-manuals is the link, your manual is there for $15. If the bobbin thread is knotting up in the bobbin then I'd say you need to rewind a fresh bobbin and make sure it is smooth with even tension as it goes onto the bobbin. If your bobbin thread looks a bit chunky and uneven, then you won't get good results from it. Also, check that you are putting the bobbin into the bobbin case the right way, the thread needs to come off the bobbin and make a reverse direction into the tension spring (assuming yours is a removeable bobbin case, not top loading)

Whta is the answer to the curvy's thread/bobbin problems. super infuriating

If by "bobbin thread is usually too loose." you mean that you are seeing loopy stuff on top of your seam... then first you need to make sure your bobbin is un-spooling in the correct direction.

Also make sure that the tension spring on your bobbin case is not missing it's screw. Don't mess with the tension there yet... loosen your top tension first... sew on scrap fabric of the same type as your project. Loosen the top tension until you stop seeing loops on top of your seam. If you have loosened it enough to see loops on the bottom... tighten it a bit.

If all else fails make sure you re-thread the top thread with the pressure foot up position so you make sure you are getting the top thread in the tension discs and try test sewing again.

Singer 7444 trouble winding bobbin

It sounds like you don't have any tension on the thread when winding the bobbin. Make sure that you are running the thread through the tension disc on the top of the machine before going to the bobbin winder.
