I just bought an expensive new battery for my 2002 IBM ThinkPad T23, as it would not run without the power cord being plugged in, and this new battery, even after being installed & plugged into a power source for a few days, still does not allow me to run this laptop without plugging in. I may not be doing the right things when I try to use the laptop without an external power source, or there may be some other problem with the computer & not the battery. Thank you for your help.
It doesn't look to me that you're doing anything wrong there.
Was there a specific installation requirement for the battery?
I recently changed my battery on my IBM/Lenovo and all that was necessary, was to let it charge fully before usage.
If you say your battery was charged for "a few days", then I assume there is something wrong with the battery. Next to your taskbar you should see a battery symbol. Double-click on it and you should see the Thinkpad Power Manager. If there is a tab called "Battery Information", see if that gives you more details. Look at the Manufacturing date!
If you really can't run the laptop without being connected to a power source, I would definitely return the battery or at least call the vendor. If your computer is running fine otherwise, there should be nothing wrong with the machine itself.
If you can take a screenshot of that battery information window adn post it here, I am happy to look at it.
PS:
You're doing the right things when you try to use the laptop without an external power source - that's the whole idea, isn't it?
Hi ancos,
I did a little bit more research and found this post. End of story: here it looked like a defect motherboard, where the recharge circuits were blown. I really hope that it is not the case with your computer, but you should take that into consideration.
It would be bad news after all, since a MB replacement can be more expensive than buying a new computer.
Fingers crossed...;-)
Do you have the option to take the battery to another T23 and see if the problem persists?
That way you could find out if the problem lies within the battery or your computer.
Good luck!

I thank Dante777, but I have no battery icon where he said it would be. There is a flashing red battery icon attached to the hard frame of the computer, next to a green battery with a right-aimed arrow in the middle of it and an X after it. These are in the bottom, right corner of the frame of the screen. I did look elsewhere while the computer was on & found the information about my "power options" under "control panel." It says that my battery has zero percent power & is charging. The AC adaptor seems to be working, according to this power option information. I just don't seem to ever be able to actually charge either this new battery or the last one. Hopefully, it's not a motherboard problem, or I'll have to buy a new laptop! Anyway, thanks again - AnnCos
