I have a 10 yr-old Model ED25TQXEW00 side-by-side that suddenly stopped cooling (both sides). I cleaned the coils, fan and all the parts around the compressor, as I do about quarterly, so that's not the problem. You can hear the small part(relay???)next to the compressor"clicking every few minutes as if trying to start the compressor but it won't kick ON. Any idea as to the cause? Do you think it is an expensive repair? It is in excellent condition overall but given the age, should I be shopping rather than repairing??
There is normally an overload relay that protects the motor. If the motor is drawing more current than what is specified by the overload relay then it will trip. After that the bimetal will cool down and will attempt to start again. It is either that the motor is partially shorted (burned) or the starting capacitor is faulty. Before you condemn the compressor/motor (normally in one package), check or replace the starting capacitor. this can easily be done as the capacitor is readily acessible and has only 2 connections. If the capacitor is good, you can check the motor by measuring the resistance of the coil and resistance to ground. The motor coil should not be very low, maybe between 5 to 15 ohms, below that means that there is a short. Resistance of the coil to ground should be more than 500 megaohm, below that means the insulation is already compromised. If the motor/compressor is damaged, replacement will also require freon loading after motor replacement. It depends on where you are, there are places where the labor cost is so expensive that these appliances are not worth repaining anymore.
Hi,
Many times a freezer and/or refrigerator do not work right because of
a dirty condenser coil...there are also many other things that can go
wrong.
If
you are hearing a clicking or buzzing then check out the last two
tips.
If your refrigerator is running but warm, then...
Check
out these tips that I wrote about that... it is a great place to
start trouble shooting your unit...and something that you can do
rather then calling a repair person to do a simple thing for
you...
