Power problem I cannot get the camera to switch on - no amount of new batteries makes a difference. Just before it stopped working completely, it had moments where it would come on and then stop after a few minutes. I have tried brand new camera batteries, normal rechargeable AA ones but nothing works.

Hi, If
the camera has a lens that extends when you power-on, it may have
failed to park completely when power went off, due to the weak battery.
Gently press on the front of the lens barrel to attempt to seat the lens. Then (with a good battery) turn-on the camera.
If you are currently using the NiMH AA rechargeable batteries, I would
suggest you try standard Alkaline AA batteries. They have a bit more
voltage than the NiMH and it might make a difference in this case.
If that does not work, you should phone Canon Service and see if they have any suggestions. I am sure they have encountered this problem before.
Sounds like corrosion on the battery contacts. I have seen battery contacts with a thin, transparent coating that came from leaking rechargeable batteries- doesn't look like the usual green crud, but it stops electricity from getting through. Try giving the contacts a scrape- you will need a long thin screwdriver or something of the sort.
Sounds the first basic recommendation to try new batteries you already covered. Although I do have to suggest, did you use the manufacturer suggested batteries? Yes, it does make a difference. THey are programmed with the exact amount of energy your camera needs. The generic ones could be a bit above or below making all the difference.

firmware update is a update through a usb cable to update camera software internally from manuf website-try a set of energizer lithium batts in camera-not rechargable but i get over 500 pics on sngle set-some cameras won't register accurate bat levels or work well with recharables
A complete camera failure is usually caused by a power problem. Naturally, after checking the batteries, you should inspect the metal battery terminals inside the battery compartment.
Also, many cameras (including the Canon A-series) have a memory card door with a safety interlock lever (power switch) that is engaged only when the door is completely closed.
Finally, I have learned (from a Canon camera forum at Digital Camera Resource) that there is a small fuse soldered to an internal circuit board that sometimes fails for no apparent reason with several different "A" series Canon digital cameras.
The fuse story, with photos for those brave enough to void their warranty and open up the camera, begins inside this thread,
"Canon powershot A85 spare part needed!!!"

You'll need to read a couple pages down to get the entire story.
Good luck.
