Microphones do not work through player

No. This is a player, not a recorder.

Read the manual is the easiest way to get it to work- check Mic volume and make sure the mic you are using is wired correctly. If it is a condenser mic, the JVC does not provide power to it so that could be one reason.

There's nothing special about the original power cord, so I'd go to Radio Shack and get it for $8

Try switching from PAL to NTSC or from NTSC to PAL. There should be a switch on the back near your video cable connections.

if cracks having in disc mean some times header does read disc! clean your header with disc cleaner!

Check that it is in NTSC mode not PAL, switch is on the back
