The memory card is showing full but is empty what do I do?

I have just received the camera which has been used and when I started it up, it said the memory card was full. However when I plugged it into the computer the card appeared empty. I've tried viewing the contents on the camera and it says 'unavailable'. Should I just replace the card or is there something I can do? Thank you

Try checking the card slot in the camera. If it is dusty, then it might need cleaning.

Also, the problem could the the memory cards. If you are using a cheap brand, then they might not properly.

I recommend Lexar, Panasonic or SanDisk SD cards.

First of all, forget about using the built-in memory...it's very small. Does your camera work properly when a memory card is inserted? You could also go into the setup menu to "reset". That would set your camera back to factory defaults.

SOURCE: How do I switch between internal memory and memory card?

When you remove the card, can you review the pictures that are on the internal memory? If you can and you want to save them, download them to your computer. Then, with the memory card still out of the camera, format the internal memory.

MEMORY CARD SHOWING FULL BUT WHEN CAMERA CONNECTED TO DOWNLOAD TO LAPTOP OR DESKTOP ITS SHOWING FREE SPACE AND USED SPACE BUT NOT SHOWING ANY PICTURES AND VIDEOS,

Save the pictures and videos on the card. Try reformatting the card in the computer, and then again using the camera. The first reformat will ensure the card is empty, and then the camera reformat will ensure that it is recognized by the camera. If the camera reformat will not work, try a new card.

The card has corrupted. You'll likely need to use recovery software (see this article). After recovery, youmay need to format the card in your camera to correct the corruption.

"memory full" but SD cards are empty

Not sure if it will be this, but has the SD card got locked by accident? There is a little sliding button on the side of the card, which can be locked to protect the content. My camera shows the card as full if I accidentally lock the card. You can just slide it back again to unlock it. I never noticed the button was there until I accidentally knocked it while loading the card in and out of my PC to transfer the photos.

What does "Memory Full" mean? The card was empty when inserted and only 1 picture taken.

Memory full means the internal memory is full and the camera won't let you use your memory card until you format the internal memory with no card in the camera.

Is there a mode to use the built in memory vs. the memory card? And, you're using up the built in memory and not using the card? That's the way my kodak is, anyway. And, also my Sony Cyber shot.

Formatting
This function lets you format a card. Formatting prepares cards to receive
data. Before using non-Olympus cards or cards which have been formatted
on a PC, you must format them with this camera.
All data stored on the card, including protected pictures, is erased
when the card is formatted. When formatting a used card, confirm
there are no pictures that you still want to keep on the card.

Page 173 of your advanced user manual explains how to format the memory card and clear all data from it.

My memory card says full!

Try opening your My Computer screen, connect the camera to the computer and watch for the new removable disk to show up. Depending on the camera there may be two that show up. Right click on the removable disk/disks and choose format, click start and click okay. This should fully reformat the memory and you'll be able to take pictures again.
