You will need to dock the closed laptop first, then use the power button on the dock to turn it on. This will result in the output to the monitor. Alternatively, if you have the laptop open, you can toggle between the laptop LCD and external monitor (or both) by holding the blue Fn key (on the laptop keyboard) and pressing F5. My screen goes dark when I use my laptop. I have a docking station with monitor and the machine works fine. However when I undock or start up with just the laptop the screen goes black. I can still see...

Hi wilhejl,

I see that you are experiencing a video issue with you back light on this case,
you mentioned when docked on your docking station you see the video on you monitor but when undocked you get a black LCD screen and see shadows of what is on the LCD screen.

this is a back light issue that you are experiencing.

We can try and check some settings regarding this concern and se if there is anything we can do to correct what you are experiencing with your laptop

As soon as you turn your Laptop on keep on tapping F1 to will bring you to the BIOS screen if the BIOS shows up on you LCD screen without going black then most probably yo may need to change some settings in windows regarding the the LCD and power options.

  • Try docking back into your docking station and inside windows go to power options, and set your system power options to balanced.
  • On your Desktop right click anywhere on an open space to get the menu list click on personalize then click on display then click on advance settings, look for screen refresh rate change it to 59Hrtz then undock from your docking station and try booting into windows without using the docking station to check if the video will show on the LCD again on this issue.
I hope that this can help regarding your case,

Have a nice day.

I connect docking station and enabled docking hardware profile, after that when i boot no display Model Dell Latitude D 630

I believe your docking station profile is corrupted.....I suggest you to remove the existing one and allow system to recreate a new one by rebooting the computer.
1. Open System in Control Panel.
2. On the Hardware tab, click Hardware Profiles.
3. Under Available hardware profiles, Select Profile 1 (Current), and then click Delete.

Reboot the computer and test. It should work.

If that fails then you may want to try with different docking station.

Try updating to BIOS to version A16 from http://support.dell.com Ensure you are not attached to the docking station when flashing the BIOS. Once updated, connect the 90W adapter to the docking station, connect your laptop to the dock, and power on using the docking station power button.

Remove Any Docking Stations or Port Replicators From the Computer Note: Docking stations and port replicators are optional equipment. If you are unsure if you have a docking solution attached to your computer, refer to Table 1 and Table 2 for examples. To remove the docking station or port replicator, perform the following steps: Shut down the computer. Remove the docking station: Universal Docking Stations: Disconnect the docking station's USB cable from the computer. Dell latitude D600 display blacks out, showing just a ghost image

Connect an external monitor to your laptop and power it up, if you see the normal Windows images then the video card and laptop is OK and the problem is the backlight.

If you see a very dim image or flicking image on the LCD screen it means you have a backlight problem.

Dim image and/or dark display on the laptop's LCD screen indicates a faulty LCD backlight and it could be the inverter that supplies high voltage to the CCFL lamp or it is the CCLF lamp is nearly burnt out or burnt out, most likely this is the case.
The inverter can be replaced easily but the CCLF lamp is more time consuming and requires soldering skills.

No internet when docked.. needs network controller

Assume the docking station is powered. I have seen funny behaviour with my docking station. Sure way for it all to work is, everything off, fit to docking station, turn on with power button on docking station. Ensure network cable plugged before this.

If the docking station is not charging the laptop while docked, it may simply need to be plugged in using the power cord to recharge the battery.
