Question about GE GSL25JFR Brushed Steel Side by Side Refrigerator
For almost 2 years this fridge has worked great, but now we have a little problem. The only button on the front ice/water dispenser that works properly is the lock button. The others kind of work, by this I mean when they are pushed they switch to the selection. If the blower in the refrigerator side is blowing when a button is pushed it stops and then about 10 seconds later comes on again. I did it a few times to make sure that it wasn't coincidence. Also when you take a cup and push the switch to get some ice or water you get nothing. Instead of the light coming on like normal when the switch is pushed in, it comes on afterwards. Also when the switch is pushed in there is a clicking noise at the control board in the back of the fridge. I have looked at to see if any fuses were blown, but the fuse is ok at the bottom of the board. The clicking seems to be coming from the top part of the board. Sorry if this is a bit much, but wanted to include all details that I could think of. Bob
I had the exact same problem with the same model refrigerator. I wound up ordering the part from GE and was charged $69.95, there was no cheaper price elsewhere. The service rep couldn't give me a discount, but it's a lot cheaper than a service call (or replacing the food). GE should reconsider its 1 800 "GE CARES" phone number though. You get the feeling they don't.

The clicking noise is likely a relay that turns on the selected function. if you see some square shaped (about one inch by 1.5 inches tall) plastic parts on the top of the board, touch them while someone pushes a switch. if you can feel and hear the click, then this is normal. still do not know of your solution though.

Thank you for the reply, but now it is doing something else as well. Now, it almost seems like it is in a loop of clicking. I can hear the blower motor try to come on then there is the clicking sound from the relay, it stops and then starts all over again. Doing this in about 7-10 second cycles. I did find that on the control board on the back there are 3 plugs on top with wires attatching to them and then under them in the middle there is another plug by itself. When this plug underneath in the middle is unplugged the whole clicking, blower cycling stops. Any ideas as to what that controls. I am all for repairing this myself, but am also realistic that I may need to call repairman if I am unable to figure out what it is. Could it be something as little as that relay has burned out or do you think it may be something more in depth? Thank you for any insight.
Bob
I finally broke down and called a repairman the other day. He confirmed that it was a relay that was bad, but then he pleasntly surprised me. He told me that GE was having a lot of complaints about this type of problem and they issued some type of factory recall. He replaced the main board on the back panel and didn't charge me a dime. He told me that GE was footing the bill. Thank you again.
