It may be a failure of the defrost heater or the control for this feature.
The freezer gets first crack at the cold air so is far more likely to form ice once the automatic defroster fails.
The refrigerator section is a slave to the freezer and only a portion of the frigid air is circulated by a concealed fan into that compartment.
Your problem is one or more parts of the defrost system is malfunctioned and in return your problem arises. There are three parts to the system, the defrost timer or in some cases control board, defrost thermostat also known as a bi-metal, and the defrost heater. The defrost system is set up to operate as so. The defrost timer or control board will turn the machine off, in some cases every 8 hours, some 12. During this time period the defrost heaters, located behind the freezer wall and rest underneath the evaporator, yet wires to them run up the side of it, are energized and emit heat that raises upward to melt the ice that has formed on the evaporator coils. The bi-metal or defrost thermostat is at the top of the evaporator. When the heat from the heater starts to reach the bi-metal, it breaks the circuit turning the heater off. The whole purpose of this is because the freezer cool the refridgerator side by drawing air across the coils and blowing to the other side via the evap fan motor. In my opinion, if you change one part of the defrost system change them all because usually when one part fails another will follow, so save yourself the time and the food loss, the cost difference is minute.
Is your freezer working well? is their a lot of frost build up on back wall of freezer? if yes its not defrosting and this is what you can check
Defrost heater-- it usually is at bottom of the evap. coil, to check it remove wires to it ,use a meter set to the lowest ohms setting and check for somewhere between 10-50 ohms if that is what yours is its good if meter reads OL replace defrost heater
Defrost thermostat-- if clips to the top of the evap. coil and is metallic, round , about the diameter of a quarter with a plastic side with 2 wires coming from it(do not confuse it w.thermister),remove wires and check for ZERO ohms WHEN TESTING IT MUST BE COLD so check it when frost is built up,IF meter reading is OL (WHEN COLD) its the problem
Defrost timer or defrost control if has digital display to show tempature check timer(it could be anywhere except in freezer) by turning till you hear a click, the deforst heater should come on within 5 minutes if its good,if defrost doesn't come on its either the of the above parts (heater/t-stat) defrost control is hard for unskilled lay persons to check so if heater and defrost t-stat are good replace control
Open the fresh food door. Get down low and look up underneath the control panel. There will be a small round hole. Use a flat blade screwdriver to turn the defrost timer clockwise slowly until the compressor turns off. The timer will engage the defrost heater if it is not broken. The defrost cycle will last about 20 minutes and then resume cooling. If it does not defrost you will need to replace the defrost termination thermostat in the freezer and possibly the defrost timer.
There's a problem with the defrost system , could be the timer , the heaters or the defrost terminator. Most of the times is the defrost timer that goes bad.
it sounds like you have a defrost problem first you need to find the defrost timer and advance it into defrost then take the back section of the freezer apart check to see if the heater is glowing if it is you need a new timer if not you need to unplug the ref take the wires off of the heater and with an ohm meter check to see if you have continuity if not you need heaters if it does have continuity you will need to replace the defrost terminator located somewhere on the evaporator usually located either top left or top right
The refrigerator gets air from the freezer. Look in the freezer for frost. If you have frost in the back or bottom the you have a defrost problem. Could be a timer or heater that is bad. If no frost do you hear a fan? You should have a evaporator fan running. Maybe thats out and it not circulating air for the refrigerator. You can check this out.
Hope it helps
sounds like ayou could be having a problem with the defrost system pull the back cover off and you will see a metal bracket about half way up the coils and one at the bottom some models just have the one at the bottom these are defrost heaters check and see if one is burned out if so defroset replace heater and you will be ok if heaters are good check at the top of the coils there is a small round thing cliped onto one of the coil lines with 2 wires coming out of it this is a defrost bimetal or defrost thermostat now for this check the bimetal has to be cold and you need an ohm meter it is a simple test when cold it should read close which with and anolog meter will peg the neddle a digital will read 0.0 -0.2 this means this part is good if the needle does not move or you get no reading it is bad replace it now if the heaters and bimetal are good there is and evaporator thermister also located on the evapoator it is a small white look like a small bulett it could be sending the wrong information to the mother board this part is about 10.00 and the mother board on theif you still have a problem im afraid to say you mother board is bad replace it and you should be good to go with out all the snow it runs about 150 - 200 dollars depending on who you get it from.
